Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

It's been a long time since I posted on this site. Bailey is now 4 years old and is just wonderful. I have the opportunity to adopt a dog which they say is a poodle terrier mix but looks exactly like a miniature version of my Bailey. I think he is a Goldendoodle. My question is, he is approximately 4 years old and was rescued from a high-kill shelter. He was fixed last week, currently has a UTI and they think he was an outdoor dog. He doesn't seem to know any commands nor is he potty trained. The people at the rescue say he is trainable, but I don't trust anyone besides the people on this site. Can a dog be trained at 4 years old? I will be meeting him again later this evening, I met him earlier today he is a bit timid but he was very very sweet but he is nervous. He lets you hold him in his arms and seems to enjoy it I'm just worried if I should proceed with this. Any input would be greatly appreciated

It always amazes me how resilient and adaptable and loving dogs are. If people were more like dogs the world would be a better place. I'm so glad that DRC could give these girls a new wonderful life. I bet they are wonderful dogs.

They seem to be, and they are also drop dead gorgeous, lol.

Someone once told me that if a dog is an "outside" dog, he will never "mess" in the house....since he's only ever gone outside.    It makes sense to me.

Thanks for that information, but after really thinking about this and worried about not having any history on this dog I have decided to not take him. Plus they told me he would need a thorough dental cleaning and possibly some teeth extracted. I feel that he would need so much work and that I would be taking away from Bailey. I just didn't feel 100% sure and I know once I take it it will be my dog no matter what, so I'm going to keep looking for that one that will steal my heart 100%. This site gave me all different opinions which I took to heart! Thank you.

I think you made the right decision.  My heart goes out to all these dogs in need.  Very very sad the way they are treated and what they have been through.  I am confident you will find your next love.  Every day there are wonderful dogs young and old that need to be re-homed for some reason.  I would also have a person that knows dogs help you evaluate the dogs to make sure you can accept them into your home.  I did not take that advice myself when I went to get Elli...I did not actually have that opportunity...the family wanted Elli to leave right away.  However, I did see her health record from the Vet, and also knew that she had been in a family with a young child and another dog.  Yes, the family also warned that she liked to chase squirrels, etc.  What they didn't say was how absolutely out of control she could become and that she was a "runner".  I wasn't used to that with Skadi.  I could leave Skadi outside and she never ever strayed...she is the perfect dog.  So like I said before, warp forward 3 years and Elli has settled in...but is still a runner...which has me vigilante every time she is outside the fenced area.  She is much much calmer, my DH runs with her on a regular basis, and her age is slowing her down a bit... she is going on 9 years old. Good luck with finding that right "love".  There are so many many furkids out there just needing someone who can take the time, love, patience and money to care for them.

Adult Rescues have their own special needs and it is so individual for each one. Rescuing a dog and saving its life is rewarding in itself, but if you aren't sure you aren't in for the long haul with him, you were right not to take him. Since a rescue has already saved his life, he is safe until the right owner comes along. Getting another dog, whether it's a rescue or not, will both take away and add to your other dog's life. Usually, after settling in there is more enrichment for all three of you.
