I will.  I'm looking at the recommended foods from this website and Dog Food Advisor.  I currently have such a picky eater.  It's a struggle to get him to eat in the am.  He ate great while we were away on vacation and for about four days after we came home.  Now he is back to his not wanting to eat in the am. I normally feed Orijen regional red and mix about two tablespoons of wet.  The wet is how I rotate the flavor for him.  I just tried ACANA Duck and Pear, he liked it at first but the last few mornings he turned up his nose.  So frustrating.

It's a common problem, and we have lots of advice on how to deal with it  here, lol. If you haven't already read this discussion, do yourself a favor and read it. It's fun and funny, but you just may have a lightbulb moment: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/an-ode-...

I have two picky eaters. Morning is always a struggle for them but one (Pippa) frequently just won't even come over to pretend interest. Some days she does and I cant tell you what makes the difference for her. We occasionally scramble an egg and split it among the three girls and even that doesn't make a difference. On the days that she doesn't eat breakfast, I typically feed her both meals for dinner. She gets 1/2 cup for each meal and I give her just a bit less than one whole cup if she didn't eat breakfast.

Janne, it might be a better idea to post these questions in a separate discussion here in the Food Group rather than having here as part of our recommended brands list, lol.

I have a picky eater also.  I just don't cater to it unless it is important that he eat at that moment. He often skips meals, especially when we are in our RV.  If I really need him to eat, I will add some unflavored yogurt, cottage cheese, or even crumble a cookie and mix it with the kibble, but honestly I just try to ignore it when he doesn't eat.

Yay! You got the date updated.  :-}

Hi all,

We'll be switching our 12-week-year-old puppy's food very soon. We are leaning towards Zingature Lamb Formula, which is on this forum's recommended list. Our friend also feeds her dog this brand/formula and has had great success. However, I noticed Peas, Pea FLour, and Pea Protein are listed as the first seven ingredients. From my research on other sites, I read it's best to avoid foods with pea protein within the first 7 ingredients of the formula.

Here's the list of ingredients:

Lamb, Lamb Meal, Peas, Chickpeas, Pea Flour, Sunflower Oil (Preserved with Citric Acid), Pea Protein,

https://www.zignature.com/?portfolio=lamb-formula-dry&lang=en

I will talk to my vet, but curious about this forum's thoughts. Thank you as always.

There is absolutely no reason in the world why you should avoid pea protein in the first 7 ingredients of the formula. And if your "research" includes the ridiculous misinformation about taurine deficiencies that made the rounds of the dumb dog owner groups on FB recently, here's the scoop on that: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/taurine...

As you will see if you read through the discussion I linked above, there is no research showing that legumes have any negative effect when moderate amounts are included in a healthy, normal dog's diet. And if they are listed as far down the list as 7th, that's a very small amount indeed.

Regarding talking to your vet about this, go right ahead. I will be surprised if he/she is even aware of any controversy about pea protein in dog food. You should also be aware that there is no nutritional curriculum in vet school, and what most vets know about commercial pet foods comes directly from the salespeople at Hill's, Purina, and Mars.

What about pea protein listed in the first seven? Your response focused on pea flour, but I was mostly concerned with the protein.

That was an error on my part. I corrected it to read pea protein, which is actually even less worrisome than pea flour, lol, since it doesn't involve fillers.

I see you edited your original reply from "flour" to "protein". Thank you for the info. and your perspective.

By the way, I always talk to my vet about everything. She is the one looking after his care. Yes, there are other resources, such as this site which I am very grateful for, but please mind your tone when responding to people's posts. We are just trying to educate ourselves. Thanks.

I'm sorry if there seemed to be something in my tone which was offensive. No offense is intended, ever.
