What is your opinion on heart worm preventatives? ivermectin vs milbemycin oxime

What is your opinion on heartworm preventatives? I have read that there are recommendations to test your dog every 4 months and treat only when positive. Otherwise there are 2 choices ivermectin and milbemycin oxime. Has anyone had any good or bad results with either on goldendoodles?

I questioned my vet about having to test for HW each year even though my dogs were on Heartgard year round. He told me that the manufacturer's warranty requires annual testing. So I stopped giving it during the winter months.

Annabelle had been on Revolution when she got the worms. I have had her on Interceptor since then. While there have been no issues on it, I have been thinking about changing to Heartgard. Mainly because it has a good reputation.

And I have used used Sentinel which is milbemycin oxime and lufenuron for years, except during the time when it wasn't unavailable I think we used heartguard. I haven't ever had any side effects. I think that like any medication there is the possibility for adverse reactions, but I'm more afraid of heartworms than I am of the preventative.

Amen to that.

My new puppy is on Sentinel.

I'm going to need full details on this new addition..

LOL, he is a Miniature Poodle. Silver, 3 months old.

I hope you will post pictures soon :)

I have used Sentinel every month with about the last six dogs, with Activyl for fleas.

So its seems the consensus is between Sentinel and heartguard.....anyone had their dog on both ?I guess I will be starting one of the 2 really soon.

Does your vet have any recommendations?
