Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I noticed Fromm recently changed the format of their Daily Feeding Recommendations for the Large Breed Puppy Gold formula (not sure about their other formulas). Previously, the recommendation was the puppy's current weight, grouped by current age (in multiples of 10). Their new recommendation is by the puppy's "Expected Mature Weight", grouped by current age (in multiples of 20). Does anyone have any knowledge on why they changed it?
Comparing the two, there's a discrepancy on how much we should feed our 7-month, 53lb puppy. On the old method (still listed on their bag), he should get 3 7/8 cups a day (7-month puppy/50lb group). The new method recommends 2 3/4 to 3 1/3 cups a day.
I haven't called Fromm yet. I find it confusing that a company would use an expected mature weight method for a puppy formula for owners of non-purebred dogs. I think I know how much our GD will weigh as an adult but that's a just an educated guess.

Unfortunately, when puppy Belle ate a soiled infant diaper, I mixed the hydrogen peroxide to make her throw up with plain yogurt. Ever since, she won't have anything to do with yogurt in any form, even when mixed with her favorite smashed blueberries. I was looking for a substitute for yogurt when I introduced her to cottage cheese.
Mine think that peanut butter is just the best treat in the world - we get only the smushed peanuts variety without added 'stuff' and it may or may not be healthy overall, but it works every time to get any needed medicine down with a tail wag.
Giving meds requires such a tiny amount that I can't really object to that, but I just really, really hate peanut butter for several reasons, and I especially hate that it's constantly being recommended for dogs in ridiculously large quantities, like stuffing a kong with it.
The fact is that there is virtually no food in the world that is higher in fat and calories than peanut butter. And it is not a complete protein, which means that the dog (or the child, for those who think a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is an acceptable child's lunch entree) is getting very little nutrition in exchange for all those calories and all that fat.
Fill those Kongs with yogurt and kibble, then freeze! Or smear just a bit of peanut butter inside and freeze....
Below is the statement Fromm released last week regarding the Gold update:

At the very bottom, there are links to the recipe comparisons.
Thank you for sharing this with us, Josh. It may be helpful for others who feed Fromm's Gold line. I'm sure we will have others with questions down the line, and this will be a valuable resource.
I commend Fromm for being timely and thorough with providing information to their customers.
I'm wondering if there are changes planned for the formulas in the other Fromm lines. They mentioned difficulties with the supply chain for duck, and several of the Four Star formulas are duck based. I'm going to have to keep an eye on that, as the Four Star line is what Jasper eats, and one of his favorites, Surf & Turf, is duck & salmon based.
I just called the rep again to ask that question. At this time, they do not see any changes planned for the other Fromm lines including the Four Star formulas. She said the Gold line has become very popular, so they want to protect the long-term sustainability of that line. It seems more of a scale decision, a rebalance of their resources. She added that it's not an issue of duck sources "drying up" that they would not be able to continue with the Four Star.
In regards to the Gold line, I'm wondering if pups will notice a difference considering duck was the first ingredient.
It will be interesting to see. I hear conflicting things about just how well developed their taste buds are, lol.
Thank you for calling Fromm again, I appreciate it.
