Riley the bernedoodle

Hi,

We've chosen our next dog!  She's a 5-week old bernedoodle (Bernese mountain dog/standard poodle) - coming home in late September.  We wanted something really different from Luna (F1 mini goldendoodle) since our hearts are still broken from her passing.

I know Luna never had the tufts around her eyes and she was a flat-coated goldendoodle so I'm predicting at least "scruffy" for this little one.  I looked at some pictures of Bernese puppies and she only looks slightly fluffier than one of those so I don't think she will be curly.

What do you think?

8 weeks - 12.3 lbs / 5.6 kg

10 weeks - 14.7 lbs / 6.7 kg

14 weeks - 22 lbs / 10 kg

16 weeks - 30 lbs / 14 kg

20 weeks - 40 lbs / 18 kg 

7 months- 50 lbs / 23 kg

Results are in - she weighs 12.3 lbs (5.6 kg).  Big girl!  Luna was about 7 lbs when she came home.

I tried one of those puppy weight estimators online using her weight at the vet yesterday,.. it said she'd top out at 50 pounds.  I actually laughed out loud :p

I'm predicting at least 80 lbs.

.. and I found this chart online, I really hope it's wrong LOL.  It would have her topping out over 100 lbs.

J, Our biggest boy is 90 pounds. We tell people we like big dogs because we are too lazy to have to bend over to pet them. Kona is the perfect petting height! You will love Riley no matter how big she gets. 

BTW, as a puppy, we were sure we could see him growing overnight!

I swear she seems bigger than she did when we brought her home Saturday... the overnight growth is definitely a thing! :)

I think it depends on the size of the parents more than anything else but 50 lbs seems low.

Georgia was 12 lbs at 8 weeks. The parents were 42 and 55 lbs. The breeders estimated between 45-50 lbs. The vet at her first visit said "Are you crazy? Look at the size of those paws!" She is currently 49 lbs at 5 years old but she does have big feet!

Yeah that's what I always thought too.  Breeder said both parents were around 60 lbs though that would be small for a female Bernese and for a male standard poodle so I'm not putting much stock in her estimate.  

It does give me hope that your Georgia was about that weight at 12 wks and topped out at 50 lbs!  It would actually make sense if the breeder's weight info was accurate since poodle dad was 60 lbs and female poodle would be less than that... so she could be between 50-60 lbs.

Her paws are HUGE though, probably 2" across. I have read though that Bernese tend to have giant paws (probably for pulling sleds in the snow!).

10 week update

Had a vet visit yesterday - she is 6.7 kg (14.7 lbs) now - that's a 2.5 lb weight gain in 2 weeks!  Big girl!

She is definitely looking like a scruffy sort of doodle, no shedding so far from her puppy coat.  We also had a closer look at her skin - it's BLUE where her coat is black!  Must get that from poodle dad :)

The vet says her baby teeth look like they are getting ready to fall out.. bad news for our poor fingers/ankles/clothes!  Training is coming along nicely though - she knows sit, down, leave it, come, sits to go into/out of the house and potty training is making progress.  She also sleeps through the night now (9-6) which is great!

We're moving in a week so she's getting all nicely started on training just to throw everything out of whack lol.
