Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hello everyone. We adopted a 7 month old mini doodle 2 months ago. He was and still is 32 lbs. It's been 10 years since we had a puppy standard doodle in our home. Just wondering if anyone could tell us approximately what age will he be at his mature height/weight? Thanks!

There is no way to know this with a mixed breed dog. A lot depends on the parents. Was one of them a full sized Retriever? Was one a Miniature Poodle? Were they both mixed breeds themselves? If there are Minis on both sides, he might be done growing now. A lot also depends on how big your pup is going to be at maturity, and again, there is absolutely no way to know this with a mix.
Large breed dogs mature more slowly than small breeds. A Golden or Lab isn't finished growing until well past their first birthday. A mini Poodle might be finished growing as early as 6 month of age. And in all cases, the dog will continue to gain weight in the form of lean mass (muscle and bone density) for several months after the bones stop growing in length.
I'd say he should be full size by a year old, but that's just a guess. Best bet is just to enjoy being surprised, lol.
Karen,
Thanks for your response. We got him from a dog rescue (apparently the breeder gives this rescue pups, who for whatever reason doesn't sell). The rescue has a great relationship with this breeder. We were given a paper listing all of his shots as well as listing him as a double mini labradoodle (both parents were result of mini poodle and lab). After having a labradoodle for almost 10 years (passed in May), the breeder we got him from had parents on site (standard poodle and lab, neither very large 60lbs). That being said, he was 110 lbs of loveable fur...great heart! As a matter of fact, he looked like the one in your profile pic. We are just not knowledgeable of the mini's. We are definitely enjoying every moment!
Happy New Year!
If the rescue is in Ohio, I know who it is. :)
While it's often true that the standard doodles will get much bigger than either parent, when there is Mini Poodle in the mix, it's just about impossible to predict. In your pup's case, you have recessive genes for size on both sides of the pedigree, and there's no way to know whether either parent passed along "size genes" from the Lab or the Mini Poodle. This is extremely oversimplified, because genetics are complicated, but I think it's pretty safe to say your pup is not going to be over 50 lbs. :)
My profile photo is of the late great Jackdoodle, who averaged about 80 lbs throughout his life and also had the biggest heart in the world. I still miss him every single day. :)
Are you able to share the name of the breeder by chance? I have friends who fell in love with our new little guy and asked if we knew who the breeder was so they could see what they have available.
And, your Jackdoodle is most likely running around with our Murphy (which I miss daily as well).
Thanks again!
I don't know who the breeder is. For a breeder to turn over dogs to rescue on a regular basis is not really a good sign that this is a reputable and responsible breeder. If it's the same rescue, the "breeder" is basically apuppy mill.
That doesn't mean your pup isn't wonderful. Jackdoodle came from a puppy mill and he was the best dog who ever lived. But you certainly never want to recommend that anyone buy a puppy from such a place or support bad breeding practices. Adopting a puppy mill dog from rescue is a wonderful thing. Buying one from the puppy miller, not so much. :)
Luna was a mini goldendoodle, she stopped growing around 7-8 months in height/length then filled out. I'd say your pup sounds about Luna's size, is likely done growing in size and will top out at 36-40 lbs at a healthy adult weight once he fills out.
Thanks! This is the first older pup we've ever adopted, so wasn't sure!
Mini's are pretty much done growing at 8 or 9 months, but 32 pounds is already too large for a mini (technically mii's weigh less). If she is 7 months and 32 pounds, she is most likely not done growing. She is going to be at least a medium - maybe 40 pounds or larger. This is just my guess.
I adopted a "mini-labradoodle" at 7 months of age 11 years ago--when I got her, she was 27 pounds but has short legs and a stocky body, so she gained quite a bit of weight- but not much height-and is now around 40-42 pounds. It seems like at 7 months, they are often (not always!) about 2/3 of their adult weight, but almost their full height. If that is true, your "mini" would end up at around 48-50 pounds and would be a medium (already too big for a mini, as someone else has said).
Thanks for your response! I'm thinking you all may be on to something. I guess time will tell with my new little friend. It's funny tho, after having a 110lb ball of furry, loveable labradoodle, 45-50 is a mini to us!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
