I would even recommend our 'pound' shelter! It's almost 'no kill' when it comes to dogs...they don't euthanize unless a dog is severely ill or severely aggressive and even then it's not just one person who makes the call. Blue Mountain Humane Society -- I've volunteered there and spent time talking with the director and volunteer coordinator and they are both great gals who do a great job running the place! I know one dog who was rescued from a horrible situation (choke chain embedded in neck, etc) was finally adopted after 2 years in the shelter!!! She had had several people who would take her for a weekend so she wouldn't go stir crazy now and then...and one man who volunteered there finally decided that it was time to make her his!

I don't remember the name of the rescue where we got Thule...I was new to all this stuff then and honestly didn't pay attention. It was run by a woman in Yakima, WA who kept most (all?) the dogs in her home...probably 30 running around inside and a few outside. Remarkably her living room was NOT smelly at all. So she was doing something right! She seemed very kind and was working on the whole nonprofit thing...but that's ALL I remember. I don't know much else!
Atlanta Pet Rescue is where we found Lily. They have a wonderful web site with pictures and descriptions of their dogs and also post a picture with their adoptive family. The adoption form was very detailed, very much like the one from my breeder of my other dog. First you submitt this form, then they e-mail you to let you know you've passed the screening process. You then set an appointment to interview and hopefully adopt the dog. All members of the family are required to attend as well as any pets in the home. Once you interview, you meet the dog with all family members and pets to see if there are any potential problems. If you pass this step, you get counseling on care, feeding and traveling. Then you pay the fee and get your picture taken with your new family member. From the time I first contacted them it was a very satistying experience. I would highly recommend this shelter if you live near the Atlanta area. I'm not sure if they have a shipping option available as we did not need it.
