If you read Leigh's post about being aware of vaccine reactions you will know that my little Max had a bad reaction and almost died. He is now blind and not very tolerant of being picked up or petted. This really stinks because he was headed for a home with a Down's Syndrome/Autistic child. I am having a really hard time finding dogs right now and for this little boy, losing Max would be really nasty. He has met him, played with him and was showing some very positive behavior towards him. You may say, well just get a different dog and he won't know the difference. For some, that may be true, but this little guy has something very close to a photographic memory and will know in a heartbeat. I have to find a chocolate fleece coated male with a white spot on his chest which is really going to be hard I am afraid. I did not have my little girl vaccinated because of the dangers I am finding out about and now I am even more determined not to do it since I have seen this happen to a puppy. Honestly, it makes no sense. I have never had this happen before and I had no hesitations taking him in for them. I am horrified of Parvo as about 16 years ago I had a neighbor's dog to poop in my yard and I lost a mother dog and a litter of puppies as a result even though they were not old enough for a shot. Mom was vaccinated but this strain jumped the vaccine and she reacted to the medicine they gave her to try and save her. I had to burn everything and start over. At the time I was 19 and had built everything myself. Maybe this is just one of the freak things that is going to happen occasionally, but it sure does hurt when it does.

Oh.... I am so sorry.....
I'm so sorry to hear this. Poor little Max! I hope you are able to find a dog for this little boy that will work out just as well...but in the meantime I'm sad for Max...ugh...sadness!
Mary - I am sorry to hear about Max. I am the owner of a doodle that went blind due to an accident at about 8 weeks old, He gradually has regained significant vision. Is it possible Max will regain his sight. We beleive that part of reason he regained sight was that we started him on fish oil and vitamins.

I realize that he probably will not be suitable for the child even if he regains his vision. Even if Max never regains his sight he can and will be able to live a happy life.

Wishng the best for Max, the child and you.

Andy
Thanks so much and I will check into those vitamins soon!
I am kind of at a loss of words, this is so sad for Max and the little boy. I hope you are able to find another dog that fits for the little guy.
I read a little bit about this in Leigh's post. I'm so sorry for you, Max, and that little boy. I'm sure that Max can live a happy life, even without his sight, but it sounds like Max and the little boy had already bonded. I'm sure Max will get comfortable with being picked up and petted again, but he's got a lot to get used to now. I feel so bad for all of you. I hope it all works out somehow.
We are all pretty baffled about this but this morning Max effectively dodged several things in the yard and is really learning to use his ears. He actually walked out a little by himself this morning. Maybe this is a good sign.
Oh my gosh.....this is terrible news. I pray you all get through this - BIG KISSES to Max!!
Very sad. I hope all works out!!
Mine too. You better believe I will be sticking around the vets office to make sure that he is observed. I have some thank yous to make because my vet stayed through his lunch to help Max and I found out later that one of the vet techs actually stayed overnight to help watch him. Today, he actually walked up to one of his toys and gave it a squeak. Maybe he is going to be okay.
Mary,
I am sick over this. I can't imagine what you, your family, Max, the little boy he was supposed to go to, are going through. I am so sorry that this happened.
We haven't had a dog in our home for 7 years until Samantha entered our lives. I know of all the controversy on human vaccines but have never heard of the same in dogs - I don't know why it never occured to me. How rare is this?
What, if anything, to the drug manufacturer's have to say about this. Get a human sick, like the peanut butter, and it is quickly in the news and off the shelves and the lawyers get involved. What can be done to bring this to the attention of those who can change things? Obama is looking to get a puppy - maybe he (his staff) would interested; am I just being a DM who is scared for her and her fluffy friends?
How sad! Is there any chance at all he will see again?
