Scout has crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge

It has taken me 7 months to be able to write this post. We had to have our  2 1/2 year old Goldendoodle, Scout put down due to severe aggression. We had a behaviorist working with us but it was determined by our veterinarian that "Scout wasn't wired right" for lack of a better term. It was a sad day for us because 80% of the time she was fine but we never had a clue when the 20% of aggression was going to happen. As she grew, so did the episodes of aggression.  Scout attacked me and then a couple of weeks later, attacked my husband while on a daily walk. Neither situation warranted her to protect herself or attack. Since I have young grandchildren who are often at my home, I couldn't take the chance of Scouty actually hurting someone else. Also I feared continuing to walk with her with the possibility of her attacking anyone. We were very sad to lose Scouty, especially at such a young age.

Such a sad situation.  I just read both of the recommended articles and found both to be quite good.  Until you have lived with such a dog, you have no idea the stress involved.  And in many cases, you can almost sense the dog's unhappiness.  A dog who is aggressive is almost always a fearful dog, and living in constant fear is not quality living.  Such a difficult decision to have to make, but when it is done out of love for the dog it can be the best thing. Keep the good memories, as I'm sure you have many of your darling pup.

I am so sorry LInda!  So young and something you would never think of happening.  Hugs to you and your family!

Linda, I am so sorry. We had a very similar situation with a Springer Spaniel about 30 years ago. It happened when she was around 2 also. We had behaviorist and trainers and tried Prozac and everything. She bit each of us...never seriously but it was so dangerous and our children were in elementary school. The attacks were never provoked and came out of no where. I know that pain of that loss and you have my deepest sympathy.

This is also a good article, and contains info about a FB group for those that have been affected behavioura

 euthanasia. Big hugs to you.

I thank all of you so much for your prayers and kind words about losing Scouty.  It was such a hard decision to make for my pet but after talking to the vet and behaviorist, they agreed it was the right decision and said they would have done the same thing.  I am happy we had  2 1/2 years with Scout.  I try to console myself by saying she was dearly loved and had a good home.  We miss her everyday.  Thanks again for making this a little easier.

Stella, that is a very helpful article.

Linda, My heart grieves with you. This is such a difficult decision but one that you had to make. It sounds like you pursued all options and made your decision with love and dignity and in Scout's best interest.

I'm so sorry to read this, what a horrible decision to have to make. Behavioural euthanasia is poorly understood by many people, but for your dog, mental pain is just as bad as physical pain. You did the right thing for Scout and your family. I'm not sure if you have read this before, my friend found it helpful when deciding to have her dog put to sleep because of her behaviour. My thoughts and hugs are with you.
