Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I swear..my doodle is so high maintanence (he must take after his mom) and the pup used to love these certain edible dog bones (Ziggies) and l loved them too because they were edible and took awhile for him to eat. But now, he doesn't like them anymore..in fact, he'll like something once and then turn his nose up at it when I try to give it to him. Its like a graveyard of bones around my house! Any tips? Or...any new ideas of bones I could try. He did like Dingo's for awhile..now doesn't..and I've tried the pig ear alternatives..loved them..now doesnt'. haahah...

Megan,
I've had labs and goldens my whole life, but I have never had a dog that is as picky and indifferent as my Doodle, Tully. He will eat something once or twice and then refuse it ever after. He does this with food (I hope some of the bailout money will come my way for dog food bills!), treats, and toys, except for his "baby." We used to have to hold the dogs back until we fed them; now we have to plead with Tully to eat. I know that Poodles can be notoriously picky, but Tully is a multi-gen ALD-- the poodle stuff should be gone! I did buy some Wellness treats and he's liked them for a few days now (they're soft), so maybe his palate is becoming more (or less!) discerning.
My pup loves freeze dried liver.... LOVES IT. It can be a bit pricey so we break the peices up into smaller ones to make it last longer. They sell it at Petco, Pet Smart, etc... comes in a plastic tub.

Good luck!
Sometimes they rotate their likes. So hide some of his former likes and bring them out again in a few weeks...he might change his mind.
For training treats I use Cheerio's. I bought both Honey Nut and regular and rotate those for training treats. You can give them 100's of them and it will not effect the appetite or make them chunky.

For chewies I have been using the odorless Bully sticks. Which seem to keep him busy for a long time. The Ziggies Riley still likes, but he can eat half of it in about 30 minutes.
Good to know it's not just Bear who's picky. He really could care less about his food lately unless I hand feed him. The only treat that he likes is shaved chicken from the deli. He won't touch anything else. When I first got him he was only eating canned food and it took FOREVER to get him off of it. I've never had a picky dog before, I thought dogs would eat anything.
try some of the homemade treats in the food section. The liver ones with the oatmeal works great it you just make little balls out of them and bake. Fergie never gets tired of them. Cat treats work well for training too. They really like smelly things.
