We just had a litter of puppies and 5 were chocolate. My question is, one is a milk chocolate, much lighter than his littermates, is he going to be a parchment color? Does anyone know how to tell.
Colors like Parchment and Silver are caused by the "V' genetic factor. This is also called the shades or silvering factor. Parchment dogs must be "v v" ( two small "v"s, one from each parent). The is a good color explanation site at www.tallai-australian-labradoodles.com/Labradoodle-Colour-Genetics.htw. If you know both parents color genes you can figure out if parchment is even possible. if you do not know your dogs parents color genes, but you know the exact colors of the grandparents and great grandparents you might still be able to figure out the possibilities for your puppies. I am pretty sure that Morning Smile would be able to tell you the color genes of her parents. If she is cafe as you think she is "V v". So if Sunny carries a "v" it would be possible to have a parchment pup.
this is a continuation of the above. My 10 month old ALD "Tigger" was born milk chocolate. He was a gorgeous brown red by 4 months. Everyone kidded that a human would have to pay $400 for hair that color. His adult coat began coming in a deep dark chocolate, but now at 10 months it is lightening to cafe, with red brown on his legs and auburn on his tail. He could finish up as a cafe or a parchment, we will just have to wait and see, but he definitely could be"v v" because his mom is a cafe and his dad a parchment. Whatever color he ends up we think he is gorgeous and it is very fun to have a puppy that is always changing colors. Both your dogs are gorgeous and so I am sure the puppies will be too. Even if you discover that Cocoa and Sunny could have a "v v" puppy you will probably just have to wait and see, but it will be fun in the meantime.
Wow Maryann! This is a great explanation and should be very interesting to those who are into breeding and genetics. Even I can basically understand your explanation. Exciting to see how many variations are possible.
I have ablack labradoodle fron Tallai and she is 8 months old she was a very black puppy but now she is starting to silver out so it will be interesting as to what colour she will end up they are great breeders who really care about their dogs
