Advantix or Frontline???? Which one is best??? Do you give only if you see fleas or do you give all summer long?? I've heard someone say before it's just like taking a Tylenol. Don't take it unless you have a headache. What is your opinion??

Abby will be on Frontline starting next month here in Minnesota when the ticks come out - and there were earlier warnings about Advantix causing problems in the dogs - so I am staying clear of that - my vet only uses Frontline. And she will start Heartgard in May when the mosquitos come out. A friend of ours had his dog get heartworm last year - she was pretty sick. (he was giving her heartgard and she still got sick.)
Frontline is for fleas and ticks and helps against Lymes disease.
I am just back fron our vet and she wants to start Phoebe on Vectra 3D in April. I have never heard of it so I am throwing my hat into the question ring. Is anyone using this brand? I need to do some research before I commit to it.
Has anyone tried using natural things to control fleas/ticks? I have read about Flea Free, which is an all natural liquid containing garlic and other things you add to your dogs water or food. I would rather use something natural than putting pesticides on my puppy if they truly work. Any feedback? Thanks!
My vet has always recommended Frontline, but recently another vet who is a customer of my husbands said that Advantix works better on fleas. So I don't know what to believe. We've only had a problem with fleas one time a little over a year ago. I was using Frontline, but could not get rid of the fleas. My vet gave us some pills called Capstar. They immediately kill all fleas on your dog for up to 24 hours. You then up the Frontline or Advantix on your dog. It worked like a charm. So if you ever have a problem with fleas, ask your vet about Capstar. It worked for us.
We are using Vectra 3D. So far so good. Taffy itched for a few days where we put it on her, but she has been fine since. Before using the Vectra we used the Frontline and it worked as well.
I stick with Frontline Plus. Company is reputible and been around awhile and never have had an issue with fleas. I rather protect against fleas then have a problem that I will need to correct later that is more costly. Think of it as assurance your ankles won't get bit up walking from the bed to the bathroom in the middle of the night. EWWW! brings back awful memories of when I was a kid before such products.
I used frontline for years with our cocker spaniels and never had a flea or tick problem. The house next door had a terrible flea problem in the yard and inside, but our cockers never had a problem with frontline. We have started using frontline with Angel. I found a tick on her in February. We live in Virginia. usually too cold for them in winter, but we had a warm spell. We will give her a dose every month as preventative.
I use Revolution on my doodle, bichon and pekeapoo. It handles fleas, has heartworm and other worm preventative as well. I haven't had a flea issue in years. I hate using the "pesticide" but I much prefer it to the chance of getting heartworms which is a real issue in Tennessee. I also use it year round. If you wait till the season, it may be too late. However that may be different in your oart of the country...
