Still DOUBT the use of targetting? Check out my mini clicker triumph of the morning!

Rosco HATES taking baths. Even though he loves all food, he somehow can SENSE when the food I'm getting for him has to do with luring him to the bathtub. The little stinker ;-)

Well this morning he HAD to have a bath because he'll be visiting a school this afternoon.

So I decided I'd try using a target as a way to get him in the tub. The target I used is the Staples Easy Button.

He is great about pressing the button for treats. I had him repeat the exercise a few times OUTSIDE the bathroom...then IN the bathroom and then finally I put the easy button IN the tub. I figured he'd get his front paws in there (MAYBE) to hit the button and then I could get the rest of him in.

He only hesitated briefly and then hopped RIGHT in completely!!! Yahooo! He got lots of praise and some cheese.

So...another example of how you can use a target (once the dog has good targeting skills) to get a dog to go somewhere he'd otherwise NOT go. Worked BETTER than a treat lure actually because he was used to WANTING to go where the target was.

He still hated his bath...but one triumph at a time, right?

Once the bath was done I had him press the button some more so it was a good experience for him.

You're our target guru Adina and Rosco!
lol - love the staples easy button - I think I have to go get one of those.
Me too! THAT should make it EASY!!!

OK Adina, you made me a believer!
How do I get the "easy button"? What a great idea!!
Staples.
great idea! I am getting me an easy button
$4.99 at staples.com
I will check out the store tomorrow. Fantastic idea Adina tho I am not surprised you have it!!! I thought it was only a tv ad prop!
Adina, that was such a great idea about the Easy button that I pulled one I had in my drawer as a joke and trained Maizy to hit it with her front paw using the clicker. We just had the family Easter dinner and Maizy demonstrated her new commands, "sit", "down", "touching her nose to a wand" and of course, at the end, she put her paw on the Easy button. She really seemed to enjoy the attention everyone gave and the applause. I fear, however, that I am training a circus dog! It really showed how great clicker training works.
Haha! How fun! Rosco showed off his 'easy button' skills at his therapy gig today and then for my in-laws who are visiting today. It's such a simple 'trick' but always gets a laugh :) Next you'll have to teach 'take a bow'!
After reading your trimumph I bought the Staples button. Didn't take long or too much chicken to get her to it the button with her foot. I did 'show' her how to click it by putting her foot in it because she just kept nuzzling it acrosss the floor with her nose. Now she thinks she is the greatest pup on earth! It is so funny - I walked out of the room to just to refill the coffee cup, she hit the button and sat at attention waiting for me to come back in for her c&t. Doesn't take them long, does it?
