Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Our Balou is a female doodle of ten months old. We live in the Netherlands but our Balou is born in the USA. We discovered it's true, there isn't a disadvantage for the doodle, what a great and lovely dog it is. However we have a strange thing with her health. She has periods of very fast breathing (60 to 80 times a minute). It is starting after just a small walk but also suddenly when she's just laying on the floor. It's lasting hours before she is breathing slower.
Often she seems exhousted during such a period of rapid breathing.
We visited several vets but they can't find anything. They found it abnormal and strange and never saw anything like this. Could it be something we don't know in the Netherlands but you've experienced in the USA ?
Does anyone recognize this symptoms and can help us finding a solution.
Balou is really a great dog and we would like soon be able to help her recovering.

Marcy,Thank you very much for your mail. Following your mail we searched the internet to learn more about laryngeal paralyses and we found you could be right. Balou didn't had an injury to her neck but the vet found she had a sensitive throat. Monday we will ask the vet about laryngeal paralyses. On the 12th of May she will be examined with a bronchoscope, maybe he can look for laryngeal paralyses at the same time.
When Whopper was spayed, we spent a few nights that week up all night because of her very rapid and seemingly labored breathing. We found that if we gave her an ice cube, it calmed her back down and slowed her breathing to a regular rate. We also took her to the vet and they checked her lungs and heart, even did x-rays, and said that there wasn't anything wrong. Every now and then she still has the random episodes and when we catch them, we still try and get her an ice cube just to get her back into a relaxed state. This obviously doesn't help with what could be the problem, but if you're looking for ways to try and settle Balou, definitely try an ice cube.
My dog was just diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis. I would mention it to your vet to see if he's looked for it. He pants alot and can't catch his breath.

I just found this discussion as I was searching something else, I hope by this time your Balou is doing well, but if you are still interested, my 22 month old goldendoodle Cooper, has had rapid breathing episodes since we brought him home at 12 weeks. In fact I originally joined doodlekisses to see if I could find any information to help him, but I have not.
After bringing these episodes to my vets attention he did an ekg and found VPCs (ventricular premature contractions). We were referred to a cardiologist. The cardiologist ran numerous tests and we tried a few different heart medicines. We found a medication that worked for him and he seemed to do better, for awhile.
Cooper has just been diagnosed with Addison's Disease. His breathing is rapid once again, even thou I dont know if the two are related, his heart meds may just need to be adjusted. The Addison's just was diagnosed and I havent been able to research much yet. We are in the midst of vet visits and need to see the cardiologist about all that is going on. But in the meantime maybe this will help you.
The Rapid breathing was explained by our vet as a puppies way of providing its body the ability to grow and brain to be nurished during sleep. He is 8 mths and doesn't do this nearly as drastically as he did in the first few months of his life. He only did it while asleep as well.
Although not what Herman was describing it may help others on the topic.

I realize this is a very old post, but I was wondering how your dog was doing now after all these years?

Anyone that commented on this post, how are your dogs doing now?

We had rapid breathing and gagging way back when this post was first written which have now come into a full crisis 6 years later.

Wondering if you had the surgery or found any answers that were helpful?

I began to write out of concern and then realized this is an older thread. If you have had a  fecal/blood test, the dog is of the proper weight for its height, and isn't too hot, and is otherwise healthy, hopefully everything is resolved.  I echo these comments and hope your dog is doing well!

Daisy (almost 7 months) does this too. She was running around a bit ago and she may be cooling off. Haven't had her checked for it because usually it regulates after she rests for a bit.
