So I decided to try and change foods....which was a difficult decision because Shiloh had such awful diarrhea as a smaller puppy and it was a constant battle to find the right food....I finally did with Beneful large breed puppy food....no more diarrhea and so he ate that probably for the last 6 months....but then I started reading all the stuff about not feeding them corn and looked at the research on the different foods and decided to try the costco kirkland brand food. I started with a mix on Monday with the Beneful...but Monday afternoon while my 14 year old son was home alone....the dogs got into a bag of chocolate chip cookies (there were none left) Now I am fighting massive amounts of diarrhea from two doodles and I have no idea if it is the food or the cookies! I was so frustrated with my son....and upset that my food experiment was tainted by chocolate chip cookies! Should I now try the pumpkin thing that I have been reading about? I just want to cry!
Theobromine in chocolate is toxic to dogs. I'm not sure @ what amount. I believe it has to do with the type of chocolate, how much is consumed and the body weight of your dog. I would call the vet to be on the safe side.
Please continue to let us know how they are doing.
I did call the vet, I should have said that....he said that the amount and kind of chocolate that they had was not going to be toxi....that mostly it is the really dark pure chocolates with cocoa that are dangerous for the dogs....but that the commercialized chocolate chips wouldn't be anything to worry about...that way....but I still have to wonder if a bag of cookies is the diarrhea culprit....or the new food....or maybe both. But either way, wondering what my next step should be...pumpkin? Continue with the new food....go back to beneful....I just don't know!
I would clear this up using a bland diet and some pumpkin. Then, I would go a day or two with the old food before starting a new food. I guess that is the only way to be sure.
My old dog ate 2 # of chocolate covered pretzels once. She was a 18 lb. dog and YES she ate all 2#. She had blow out exploding craps and pukes all afternoon. I was not home at the time and when I came home it was all over my brand new carpeting and running down the back of the couch and I won't say anymore. It was like out of some movie. Anyway the vet said that the thing with the chocolate is the caffeine. She'd be up all night but she'd be fine. He was right. That's what happened.
I'm having so much trouble with very loose stools with Lucy too. I want to feed the good dog food but she just doesn't do good on it. I'm trying many kinds. I'm trying yogurt and all kinds of stuff. After all you read i really think we should do these better foods. Today Lucy had a blowout in puppy class. I know how frustrating this is and I sympathize with you. The pumpkin thing works for one poop but then I'm right back to the other. It's very hard to clean up - even outside.
Just my opinion, but ALL chocolate is bad for dogs....I would never even want my dogs to mistakenly get chocolate. Had a friend who fed his dog candy and she loved it of course, till he wound up in the vets office with a 2,500.00 vet bill and a deceased dog because he didn't feel chocolate was toxic to his dog.
I'm not saying that chocolate isn't toxic....that is not the issue, nor would I give the dogs chocolate on PURPOSE.....the vet said not to freak out about the chocolate....it wasn't enough of it and not the worst kind of chocolate for dogs to be MISTAKENLY exposed to (and I didn't WANT them exposed to it....it was an ACCIDENT).....the issue is the diarrhea. I am boiling chicken and rice now and already gave them pumpkin. I hope it helps them. Thanks to most for the supportive responses.
Well this weekend I went back to feeding the boys Beneful....it might not be one of the best foods....but it is the best for us, I wanted to get them on something that was rated higher...but I just cannot deal with the diarrhea....back on Beneful and back to good poo...so I guess that is the right answer for us.
Have you tried 'chicken soup for a dog lovers soul'? It's high quality and seems really easy to digest, my 4 month old Doodle is very sensitive to food, since I put him on that I have no problems and it's really inexpensive
Glad to hear the tummies are better. Scrappy is now 2, but the first year we must have gone through every premium brand to find one that she tolerated. Most were too rich for her, no matter how slowly we introduced it. I now have both on Solid Gold Wolf King/Wolf Cub. No tummy troubles.
I know how frustrating it can be, so you're right in doing what's best for YOU. Too much research drove me over the edge and when I did find one I thought would work (she has a poultry sensitivity, as well).....her stomach wouldn't tolerate it.
Grover on the other hand, can eat anything at anytime and have no issues:)
