How do you know if your goldendoodle will shed? My breeder told me he would be low to non shedding but I was wondering if there were any other coat indications?
More curl= less shedding?
more straight= more shedding?
It has alot to do with whether its first or second generation. Also-our Gunner doesn't have much poodle look, he takes on more of the retriever look, which also means he sheds. We don't mind, but if you are looking for a non shedding dog, its best to get second generation as well as one that looks more like the poodle, we love the retriver look, so with that comes the shedding.
Our Samantha is the exception to the rule - she looks like a long haired lab. She is an F1 Chocolate LD. By what I have learned she SHOULD shed but the Doodle Gods were on my side and she does not!! We are lucky!!
Her hair has a wave to it. The only curls she has is on the top of her head. When she came home with us she was 11 weeks old, and since we got her from a pet store (before I knew better) I never saw her littermates. She looked like a Lab with straight, shiny hair.
I think the general rule is the more curl the less shedding but remember along with that usually comes matting. That's not good either. F1's usually have some shedding. Fergie does shed some but it is nothing in comparison to a full golden.
LIzzie is only 5 months old and is a F1 goldendoodle. I know you can't tell until their adult coats come it, but she has shed since she was about 3 months old. When she gets up from somewhere, I swear part of her stays there in fur! Haha! Her hair is pretty straight. Though it looks like some of the hair coming in is really curly, so I can't wait to find out what she will look like as an adult.
Good Question. I think there are generalizations but no hard rule.
My Max is an F1 mini LD. His coat is not quite as curly as a poodle. It's more the rasta curls. He doesn't shed. He is 5 months old and that could change once he loses his puppy fur but, I don't think he'll be a shedder.
Samson is an F1 GD, 20 mos old. His hair is thick and wavy. He doesn't shed, however, we have the matting issues. Shelby is an F1b GD, 8 mos old with wavy hair. She doesn't really shed and her coat isn't as thick, so no matting. However, she isn't as soft as Samson.
I guess I will have to see what he looks like when I pick him up. From the pic his hair doens't seem curly. Shedding in our house is a big deal but I love him already :)
I tried to find a picture that showed our pups hair/fur for you to compare. His coat was so thick, he looked almost twice the size of the other puppies, or fatter. The breeder picked this guy out for us because she knew we wanted a squareish jaw and a non shedder. Apparantly, they can tell because of the fleecy, wavy, thick coat. Having said that he did shed up until a bout 5 ths old-we would find clumps of his hair-sort of like cotton balls around the house. He doesn't shed at all now. No mats yet-I hope never.
I know Angel is shedding off her puppy coat (5 months). My neighbor has a GD that just turned one and she told me her doodle shed off the puppy coat, then the thick adult coat came in and she doesn't shed so much anymore. But she had to completely shave her hair because of matting.
Wonder if that will be the same for Angel. Even her shedding of the puppy coat has not been so bad. I will find hair on my clothes every now and again and I don't find hairballs in the house. I brush her 3 times a week or so.
Wendy,
I was asked what Samantha's coat will look like and how big will she get. I can finally answer the questions now that she is 15 months old; she has stopped growing and it seems her coat has finally stopped changing. This is what she will look like when she grows up! I guess that the only way to know for sure is to wait until they are about a year old - then you will know for sure!
Whopper is an f1 goldendoodle now 7 1/2 months old and doesn't shed. We are just now starting to find small mats under her chin, her underarms, and behind her ears but nothing too severe. We believe this is still her full puppy coat though so who knows what an adult coat will bring. Whopper has long, wavy hair.
Connor is an F1 goldendoodle who just turned 20 months old. His hair is reddish/apricot and is very wavy with loose curls. If he just dries naturally vs blown out, he get more of a little dreadlock look. A couple of months ago his hair started changing color - more of a butternut blonde at the roots. The lighter hair feels so soft it's unbelieveable. Now he 's getting some red at the roots again! I brush him everyday day or every other day if things are really busy. He sheds into the brush, but doesn't shed on our clothes or leave tumbleweeds on the floor.
After having had a newfie for 9 1/2 yrs and our collie for 7 yrs, the doodle's shedding doesn't even count. :-D
