Hi, I just adopted a five year old chocolate australian multi-gen labradoodle and I was wondering with all these silver hairs, are they actually grey hair or is this a feature of the breed? I'm used to labs (and dogs in general) going grey around the muzzle first as they age, and her muzzle is mostly brown and tan, but her body is speckled with grey or whitish hairs. Just wondered if she's ready for the blue-rinse set or this is just part of her lovely coat coloring. Not that I mind, we're both aging beautifully!
My three-year-old phantom goldendoodle is getting lots of gray hairs also (on his back). I think Pamela is right, they will get gray on their muzzle as they age, but the speckling is just normal. It's interesting to watch their color changes.
My Tully is an 8 month old chocolate ALD who was deep brown as a baby. He started having the silver hairs several months ago; we just had him "groomed" (to which the groomer responded by shaving him! ARRRGGGHHH!). Now, 2 weeks later, he has a red-gold beard around his pink nose, silver around his eyes, and a chocolate milk colored coat! He really looks different, but oh, is he a cutie!
Thanks for the info, I kind of figured this was just an aspect of her coat coloring. I love seeing all the different doodles, their coats and their features.
Thanks!
Erin
Samantha who is now 1 months old, started getting those white hairs around her tail area months ago. They have since grown speckled all over her spine from her neck to her tail. I think it is called 'kemp' . Not sure exactly why they grow that way but I love every one of them!
Hi...I was told they get the "silvering", or "graying" genes from the poodle side...I guess it's a recessive gene that poodles carry....? My Kodie started off as a dark chocolate, now she is a cafe with lots of silvering around her neck, and legs.....she is very pretty, and she gets lots of nice comments on her unique coloring....
OMG! As I was scrolling down the page I swear I thought you posted a picture of Samantha! From the nose up their coloring is exactly the same. Gorgeous!!!!
Kodie, Samantha, Hondo - all dark brown to start with and then lightening up. Hondo was this same color before I cut off his hair (I'm going to weave it) but his hair is darker on the body now that it is growing back in. His legs and head are lighter in color than the body. That is where the longer hair is however. We think he, and Kodie and Samantha, are all about as beautiful as they come.
