Met my first "doodle hater"

I went to see a Flyball Compition today (without Molly) and I saw a woman with a beautiful black, shaggy dog. I stopped her to ask what kind of dog he was and she told me he was a Bovier. My 7 year old daughter said, "He kind of looks like a Goldendoodle!" The owner then went on to say how "people who buy Goldendoodles" fall into the marketing ploy and spend a ridiculous amount of money on an overpriced mutt, when they could of just gotten a Bovier, which is a "real breed." I was sooo mad, but I am not one to provoke an argument, especially around my children. I did tell her we had a Goldendoodle and were very happy with her. She said, "Oh, that's fine--as long as you didn't spend too much on her." Then she went on to say I had to watch out for things like hip dysplashia and other shared genetic "defects." My husband and I just turned and walked away. My daughter was so confused as to why that woman was so rude. I explaned that some people just don't believe in intentionally breeding mixed breeds.

So I guess I have been broken in...I finally met an anti-doodle snob. LOL Just thought I'd share.

Sorry if I do not agree there... I have a beautiful Golden Retriever that we do adore and... a super cute funny goofy 9 months Labradoodle that we rescued and also adore her...

I think there should be something similar to the GCC program for many humans. If they don't pass the test they aren't allowed out in public to interact with the other humans. :) All dogs are descended from about four original "breeds". They just kept mixing and remixing to get most of todays purebreed dogs. Many pure breed owners don't bother to learn anything about their breed's origins....they just like the fact they spent tons of money on a "purebred" dog. No research into health defects, breed problems, etc. Not all of them are like that woman. Most people are a lot more tolerant. I've been pretty lucky except for the owner of the pet store my sister worked part time at. She was happy I rescued my dogs, but then went off on mixed breeds in general. I just let stuff like that roll off my back because I've met plenty of people who just love my dogs and don't care what breed they are, or are fascinated that they are a mix.

We have a solid black mini goldendoodle and everyone around the annapolis area thinks he's a portugese water dog. After 3 different rude responses to questions, I now just say, "why, yes he is a porti" and they fawn all over him and give him the attention he deserves. One guy even told me that he was a beautiful specimen and that we should really show him.

Next time you should say to the question of Is That a Porti?

'How did you guess??'

And after they fawn over him and tell you to enter him in the upcoming show... give a little giggle and say:

'Ooops did you say portie? He's actually a mini goldendoodl!'

That woman was pretty rude. People don't even seem to think before they speak. I've never had an experience like that, so if people have those thoughts, they are at least polite enough not to say it out loud in front of me. Even though Molly wasn't with you, the woman should have at least figured that you have a Goldendoodle, or know someone who has one, or are interested in them, based on your daughter saying the Bouvier looked like a goldendoodle. So if she doesn't like them, she could have tried to be a little more polite about saying it, realizing that you might have some connection with one. And I guess she thinks she doesn't have to be concerned about hip dysplasia or genetic defects in her dog since its a "real breed."?

My thoughts exactly. And it was my understanding that the health of "mixed breeds" are generally better than pure breeds. I half thought about bringing up the hybrid vigour theory (Molly's an F1) but I figured we'd be there all day that way. :)

Years ago, my husband and I went to look at a litter of Bouvier des Flandres and the darned father tied to bite me, as I walked in the front door!

I would choose Doodle, HANDS DOWN!

Me too--if I ever get another dog it will definitely be another doodle. :)

Labradoodles are like players. Dogs want to be them and people want them. There are always going to be player-haters, or should I say "Doodle-haters." lol But I know that my doodle is worth every penny we paid for her and we wouldn't trade her for ANY dog. She is smart, clean, lovable and just a darn good dog!

Ah i too just experienced my first Doodle Hater.

I went to a chain petstore in Australia to buy some fish food. They were trying to get me to sign up to their promotional club and i said i will consider it when we get our puppy. The lady at the counter then asked me what kind of puppy i was getting and i stated an Australian Labradoodle. Well.. you should of seen the look of disgust on her face, and she said well, good luck with that mutt, you certainly wont be getting any sleep.

I understand everyone has different opinions on things, but why would i get any less sleep with a labradoodle, then i would with any other breed as a puppy?

I dont understand some people.

She should get her facts straight, before she opens her mouth. It's the pedigrees that have the genetic problems.
