We are so excited. I am planning my retirement for another 1 1/2 years and found a great deal on this motorhome. We are picking it up on Thurs. Our plan is to "snowbird" in the winter to Florida. Was wondering if there are any other camper owners out there that are doodle owners. I would like to hear some doodle camping stories.
Also.................. need some ideas of great pet friendly campgrounds to visit! Thanks
Hi Congrats! We have been camping twice with our doodle and our new travel trailer. It has worked out pretty good. If we cant take them with us (like to the no-dogs-allowed beach) we leave them in the trailer. But it has been cool and a shady spot. I dont know what I would do in the heat....remember the story last year of the dog that died in the RV when the air conditioning unit stopped working while the owners were out. If you are camped in a treed shady spot - not an issue, be careful in open sun though. We are going for a 2 week camping trip in the hot Okanagan this summer. I think we will be paying the cost to send Abby to doggy summer camp for the 2 weeks so we dont have to worry about her. But the local trips have been fine.
WOW, I didn't hear about the dog that died in the heat. That is terrible. I planned on leaving Lucy inside when we go to places she can not go. Never thought about the air not working. Better rethink, thanks
Karen, We have been traveling in a 40' Class A for 16 months. We got our doodle puppy Feb. 13th and house trained and everything in the RV. It's very easy traveling with him. Most RV Parks have dog runs in them and the campground directories will specify weather or not the park you are looking into allows dogs or not. Some have weight and breed restrictions. Not sure what they are, cus our doodle is just now 40 pds.
We took him everywhere with us except the National Parks. They don't allow dogs. Upsets the natural habitat somehow.
We originally came from Florida and yes the winters are very nice. We are there now due to first grandchild's birth next month. What is just wonderful is the dog beach and how much our Murphy LOVES the ocean. It is just pure joy to watch him frolic in the surf and jump over waves and then body surf back into shore. You have just got to camp near a beach that allows dogs off leash!!!! So worth it.
Oh sounds soooooooo cool. I have been doing alot of research and there are alot of places that have weight restrictions, like no dogs over 30 #'s. Leaves Lucy out. She weighs 65#'s. I did find a beautiful campground right near the gulf beaches, BUT no dogs on the beach. ERRR, I want to be able to let her go on the beaches and in the water. We will keep looking. Where are you now?
Incase you were wondering where a good dog beach is.....we stayed at Juno Ocean RV Resort in Juno Beach Fla. GREAT location and within walking distance of a public dog beach. Also a dog park not far, but would have to drive to it.
The RV Resort is very dog friendly and you will meet so many nice RV'ers with dogs and strike up conversations and friendships just by sharing dog stories.
We find that most dogs like to hang out under the RV's when outside as its shady ofcourse, so consider the ground you are parking on or have a rug or something for Lucy to lay on out there. I keep a waterbowl outside at all times too as well as one inside. I'd suggest you get one of those stickers that say "in case of emergency, rescue my pet" to put on window. You can get away without A/C for most of the winter in Fla, but if you had it on and the power went out it would get very hot in there. Shady spots are nice but hard to find here in Fla. Palm Trees don;t offer a lot of shade. And power goes out often no matter where in fla you are due to sudden thunder storms. If you don;t treat for fleas and ticks where you live,, you should while traveling and certainly in Florida. And we have mosquitos year round in So. Fla.
Well, hope even a little of this helps.. Keep DK posted of your travels.
Thanks Sue so much for all the info. I will definately check out Juno Rv Resort. I would really like a dog beach. We will probably not be going to Florida for another year though as I can't retire until then. Gives me alot of time to find that perfect place. I do keep her flea/tick protected. I hear they are bad in Florida though.
Hey, I just had a thought, we will have to start a "Camping Doodle Group" for all of us camping doodle owners!!!!!!!!!!
Well I do not have first hand experience to share from the Florida campgrounds but I can sure tell you that our driveway would welcome all of our DK friends (and their humans of course)! Do you hear that doodles? All Florida visiting doodles we would LOVE to meet up with you! I am just North of Orlando and it would be great fun to share our doodles fav destinations.
