I already want a 2nd one. The breeder may offer me one of his litter mates for a discounted price. Would you get the sister? or wait a few months? or years?
Oh gosh...I would SOOOO wait! I know others have adopted siblings together but I couldn't do it.
I'm too much of a stickler about obedience and house training...I think I'd go nuts trying to:
-- potty and crate train TWO pups
-- teach TWO pups manners
-- teach two pups not to jump up on things
-- teach two pups not to chew my belongings.
But it all depends on you and what you think you can handle. If having a really well trained dog is important to you...WAIT till your current dog is at last 18 months.
If you're more laid back than me...get one anytime!
Thanks for all the replies!! I am undecided as of yet. The Vet bills we can handle right now. My Choc Lab was 90 + lbs so I know what big dogs require. He was a good boy and listened but not like a drill dog if you KWIM? We will have had Motta 3 weeks tomorrow and Yes, I watch him like a hawk and I do work but he comes with me. I guess a 2nd could too for a while too but then they would be crate trained or left home or in the yard while we are at work maybe. I really wanted to do the puppy stage/training once ... I thought it would be easier although I know 2 would be wild at times... especially since I do have a 3 and 5 yo also. Our dog goes with us everywhere we can go. We even got a camper so our dog could camp with us;)
I think I will leave it in God's hands. If the Breeder (who knows I want a 2nd puppy) offers me a B1G1 half off deal like I had asked.... I will go for it. But if she doesn't we will wait a couple of months and maybe look again in the fall if we still want 2 pups!
Congratulations! We have two 9-week old littermates also. We've had them for 2 weeks and they seem to be fully potty trained already (I'm keeping my fingers crossed!). It is a challenge at times keeping up with them, and I am tired at the end of the day just like any new mom (at least one in her 50s!), but I wouldn't change a thing! They absolutely love each other, and us too! Double trouble, double joy!
Wendy, thanks for adding me as a friend! It's nice to know someone else out there is in the same boat! Gus and Molly sleep together in a 42" crate. We set up the laundry room for them and placed the crate in there. During the day, they nap in the room (we have gates at the doorways (because we don't have doors), they only go into the crate at night. They like to sleep on the tile floor during the day, it's nice and cool. We live on one story, so they are close by, but not so close that we wake them up during the night when we have to go. It's nice to be able to put them in their room when I need to get something done, or when we go out, so they aren't stuck in a crate. We have their food/water bowls in there, as well as some toys. Last week, we started letting them nap anywhere in the house, but they didn't sleep as well, getting up every time we made a noise, so back to their room they went! Now when they get tired, they actually go into their room on their own to sleep, and they stay there! I don't even have to close the gates. If it's a nice day, they prefer to nap outside on the front porch, or sometimes under it. We're on 20 acres, so we don't have to worry about traffic or anything. I'm not sure if we'll get an additional crate when they get too large to share the one, but I have a sneaky suspicion that it won't be necessary, as by then I'm hoping that they will just sleep in their room at night, like they do during the daytime, with the crate open in case one wants to go into it. For now though, we continue to put them in the crate at night to reinforce potty habits. I am astonished at how fast they learn. These are the smartest dogs I've ever seen. Okay, I've gotten really wordy, sorry. Keep me posted as to how Motta and Miley are doing!
