Has anyone experienced or heard of regression in potty training?

My puppy is 4.5 months old now. From the beginning he rarely had accidents inside, never more than one pee every few days, but I think this is because we were crate training and watched him pretty closely.

From about 3.5 months on, he would have one pee accident in the house per week, and it was only because of an error on our part (in terms of letting too much time pass before letting him out). Three weeks ago (at about 15 weeks) he started showing signs of leading us to the door (i.e. coming, sitting in front of us and walking towards the door, or just sitting in front of the door) so we were feeling very hopeful that this was a turning point.

However, in the past week he has had numerous accidents, sometimes more than 2 per day. And he has peed inside right in front of us (i.e. he doesn't go off to do it in another room). We have been taking him out consistently, and have now upped the potty breaks to once every hour and half in an effort to stay on top of it.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

The only thing we can really think of is that he has been drinking alot more water lately (it's pretty hot where we live right now).

Tips and advice would be appreciated.

Also, we have had him out of the crate these days, we used to put him in the crate and move him from room to room in the day, at least during the weekdays from 9-3, but I stopped doing this a few weeks ago because he would just sit at my feet while I worked and never had any accidents. Now, we don't put him in the crate except overnight and we bought a second large wire crate to put him in when we go out.

What should we do, go back to crate training again...or put him on a water schedule (I just leave a full water bowl out all day) or ????

Absolutely had a period of regression when my puppy was a little older than yours. i think you need to go back to basics, crating, putting him back in the crate if the doesn't go and trying a while later, etc. I
think it's a way of testing limits.
Well somedays I think my 5 month old will never be housebroken. But another thing you should check if it keeps up is bladder infection.
I think most puppies have a sort of regression period. First they learn where they are supposed to go and we are very vigilant. Then we begin to "trust" them more and they also get more independent and bingo pee in the house. It is actually good that he peed right in front of you. It shows he was not being naughty, he has learned to go when you take him outside. But he has not learned that you do not want him to go in the house.I have never crated again, but become more vigilant. I also always keep my pups in the same room with me until they are at least a year old. It only takes once or twice if you catch him at the start or middle of peeing, say "no" and scoop him up at the same time. Take him immediately outside and hopefully he will finish outside and you can tell him he is a wonderful, fantastic dog. If you go back to being vigilant this time around, your puppy will also learn that it is not okay to go in the house and then he will actually be housebroken.
i agree with Maryann. This is so normal I think. Lucy is 4.5 months old now too. She's having just a couple of accidents lately. This morning she was at a sleepover at her friends house and pooped - I guess that was because her friends mom didn't know her schedule. All and all I think by about 7 months when all of this will be over and the can really be trusted. Some people think the teething thing at 4-5 months has something to do with it. Could be.
