Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We all know our Doodles are very smart dogs but, every once in a while Holly, my seven-month old F1 Goldendoodle, simply awes me with what she knows and what she can figure out.

As an example; each evening after T.V., I give Holly some exercise letting her chase a red laser dot around our very large yard. She really loves the game and looks forward to playing it. We like it because it gets rid of some of her youthful energy and seems to enable her to sleep better.

Last night, when I shut off the T.V.; Holly left the family room. I left a minute later after I extracted a DVD from the player. I found Holly calmly sitting in front of the drawer in which I keep the flashlight with the laser spot. She had made the connection between the flashlight and the game and was waiting for me to open the drawer, take out the flashlight and start playing with her.

Let's hear of some other examples of your smart Doodles!

LOL...when I say "Daddy's Home" they bark and run to whatever door they think he's coming in and act as if it's a burgler!
Rosco has his moments of intellegence. He is a big dope most of the time but he does know some vocab such as "are you hungry?" (he circles the coffee table until I get up to feed him), "wanna go out?" (excited til he goes out), if we talk about going for a walk he will nudge his collar and nudge our hands, back and forth til he talks us into taking him along. I talk to my husband on the way home from work and when ken says he loves me b/c we are hanging up and I am home, Rosco jumps up and runs to the back door. The TV off at night means he is about to go out and he knows that. And of course he knows, "mommys home or Daddys home" and he stands there until we come in and boy is he a happy dog.
thought of another thing the other day... when Rosco wants to play with a toy he walks by you and just dares you to grab it.. then will trot proudly by you just out of reach.... then you get over that game and tell him "I don't want it"... he IMMIADIATLY puts the toy in your lap and stares at you. lol
I love Rosco like a son and think he's the most fabulous male doodle ever! But, Clark and I were talking this morning about how Rosco is not exactly a brimming example of doggy intelligence. Don't get me wrong, he's smart enough and has been very trainable, learns quickly, etc.

For a second we THOUGHT maybe he was a bit more clever than usual this morning. He was licking his chest and Clark mentioned that it looked like he was actually laying his chin down just so so that his beard would stick out and he could lick it (all the smells and tastes on that thing are probably a doggy paradise). Brilliant right? But no, we decided that, if anything, he thought his body fur tasted yummy because he was accidentally getting beard fur when he licked his body.

Then we discussed the following scenario. Because Rosco eats faster than fast...I have been plopping a hollow bone into his bowl so it takes him longer to eat around it. It works great and slows him down. A smarter dog would take one look at his bowl, pull the bone OUT, then proceed with eating. Instead...this happens:

Rosco looks at his bowl: Hmmm...there's a bone in there! Munch, Munch, Munch. Darn, there's a bone in there! Munch Munch Munch. That bone sure is making it hard to reach all the kibble Munch Munch Munch. Mmmmm...that was yummy, guess I should take the bone out now.

I love him so!
I'm convinced my wee Finny, (bless him, love him like a son), is as sharp as a button:
He only ever poos in a small, specially designated sand-pit area in our yard which he accessess through a cat-flap. He rings a poochie-bell when the sand needs changing!
He feeds himself by pressing a button and activating his 'kibble dispenser', and he can turn the tap on and off for a drink!
He can start our treadmill and adjust the speed, and will happily walk for an hour or more!
And he can flip the channel on the TV when he wants to watch 'Animal Planet'!

(Well maybe not...but he sure inspires creative writing!)
They are simply amazing aren't they?? I have to tell you, we went camping a couple of weeks ago, Sampson our 2year old goldendoodle was in heaven!! We were right on a lake, nobody else around it was truely doggie heaven! He loves to play ball, there was a small hill that went down to the dock, Sampson would drop his ball so it would roll down the hill to the dock, now everytime he did this it wouldn't roll out onto the walkway to the dock, which is what he was trying to do, so he would go get his ball and drop it in another spot, and when he figured out the spot to drop it that made it so it would roll out onto the dock he would get so excited, and proud of himself, it was absolutely priceless, he did that for hours at a time!! I loved the fact that he could entertain himself so well!!
ever consider entering Sampson in a bowling league? BOL
That's really cool Janet! I wish I could have seen it!
My Finny does something similar. When he's had enough of being told 'Fetch' and 'Give', he carries his ball to the nearest precipice and drops it over the edge!
My oldest doodle LOVES ice cubes. She can be clear upstairs sound asleep and if she hears that ice maker go....WATCH out...cause here she comes and most often slides across the entire kitchen floor...she might even slide into you if you are not careful. It is so cute!!!
OK I have 1 very smart doodle (Ziggy) and a dog (Marley). Very early on Ziggy associated my putting on my coat with my leaving and "time for the crate"; so he dutifully went and got in his crate when he saw me put on my coat. Before I put on my coat, I usually sit at the kitchen counter and put on my make-up. So he has now backed it up to going to his crate when he sees me sit at the counter to put on make-up. Once it backfired because he got into his crate by himself (don't ask me how he pulled the door closed (but not locked!), so I looked over and said, oh he's in his crate, and left without checking the latch. All was fine when I got home, but he was there to greet me at the door. That was quite a while ago. I could probably leave him out as I leave now, but he will steal socks and counter surf and with 3 kids here.....
I swear this dog understands EVERYTHING I say to him....and he listens so intently looking at me and tilting his head to the side......If I tell him to go drink his water he does it....If I tell him to find his ball he does it.....If I tell him to cool it he will stop whatever it is that he's doing immediately....I know that dogs aren't competely color blind and I can proove it...Blake has two of the same toy only one is red and the other is blue...If I say go get your red dog..He brings the red one everytime...If I say "go get your blue dog"....He brings the blue one.....

I was very sick a few weeks ago with a horrible case of vertigo...I literally could not lift my head off the pillow without becoming violently ill.....Blake did not leave me for a second for 3 days........Everytime I made my way to the bathroom, Blake would follow, placing his paw on my knee while I was being sick in the bowl....Blake will not normally poop on my property....He poops on a walk and he LOVES his walks......When I was sick, I literally had to crawl outside to let him relieve himself ...He knew how sick I was and he would relieve himself immediately on the lawn and come right back to my side...My Dad came by at one point to take him on a full walk.... He didn't make it off the property....Blake refused to leave...He pooped and peed on the front lawn and pulled my Dad back to the front door.....I was totally amazed by this........freaky......
