Ok I think I get this now. I think though as this "mutt most wonderful dog breed ever" progresses-we may hear of an F 400 Z. It will be interesting, won't it? Now though another question-I have heard that the original species GR or GL mixed with a poodle (F1) is still preferred by many as opposed to an F1B or an F2. I personally do not see the point of this but was wondering if anyone else had heard this before.

Well, I do know that some people do prefer the F1's for their shaggy look & the variety. Supposedly, the "hybrid vigor" is strongest in the F1's, too. I think it's a personal preference. Just as you don't see the point of preferring an F1, some might not see the point of having a dog that's three-quarters poodle, lol.

I prefer an F1 myself because I do like that 50/50 mix =) But I also like some higher generational doodles too. I think like Karen said above me, it's the belief in 'hybrid vigor' that has some people cheering F1's above the higher gens. But hybrid vigor when there are so many similar diseases is not that useful.

F1b Goldendoodles are a mix between a goldendoodle (F1) and usually a poodle (miniature or standard) to increase the hypoallergenic qualities of the F1 goldendoodle. This gives the F1b 25% more poodle genes. Poodles also have many colors (golden retreivers are one color) and you can aim for parti-doodles, phantom poodles, and a variety of colors. However, (from my Goldendoodle book) "Careless ignorance in backcrossing or breeding generally is precisely how previous hybrids have become diluted and their future potential clouded, if not ruined forever. Every mating may vastly dilute any benefits of hybrid vigor, unless done by extremely qualified breeders...." So, leave the breeding to the breeders. I think F1 just stands for first generation cross. An F1 x F1 gives you an F2, and an F2 x F2 gives you a F3. The Australians have done a lot of generational breeding.
