I try to watch my two puppies pretty much constantly if they are not crated, and they had just come in from two hours fetching and swimming and were actually laying quietly by me chewing on a rope toy together as I tried to answer my email. Unbeknown to me my DH had just stored a bunch of plastic wrapped ink cartridges for the printer on a low open shelf. They weren't in boxes, just nice crackly plastic. Roo (the 10 month old) went from placidly chewing the rope to grabbing the nice crackly plastice wrapped ink cartidge in nothing flat. Of course the lovely noise attracted Tigger (the 4 month old) and the race was on. First Roo, then Tigger and then me. Every four or five steps Roo would turn his head to make sure Tigger was chasing. This was also the perfect time to bite down a little to make that nice crackly sound which was sure to keep Tigger interested. With each turn and bite black ink sprayed out on EVERYTHING - floor, rug, furniture, walls. I was in pusuit trying to "calmly and assertively" say "Roo drop." Which he knows perfectly well, but wasn't interested in doing ( a clear failure in my training efforts). As we all circled the house several times ending on the bed we all trod through the ink, making an interesting pattern of large and small dog prints and funny "Croc" prints from me. It was only when Roo finally "dropped" on the bedspread that I noticed that my lovely black doodle now had a tongue as black as his fur. Cleaning up Roo's tongue, face and paws and Tigger's too, of course became much more important than any peripheral damage. What if printer ink is poisonous? This created many more footprints as put them in the laundry room and began collecting possible non toxic ink solvents. At this point I had not noticed that my Crocs and hands were covered in ink also. So I spread the mess even farther. In closing I mention that witch hazel was the best dog cleaner, hand cleaner. Chlorine pool water cleans tongues nicely, and a good commercial carpet cleaner takes in right of the carpet. The bedspread and a couple of pillows were a total loss. One wall will need repainting at some point, although I did smear the ink around nicely so that the wall looks merely smudged and dirty. In all It was only three or so hours of cleaning, printer ink (at least in small quantities) is not toxic and in a couple of years this story will rank up there with "the dog and the shish ka bob" story. All I need is a little time to get a better perspective.
