I am new to this climate (Tempe). What do I need to do to make sure my pup stays healthy. I know the usual ---- no leaving in cars, lots of water. How does the hot pavement affect their paw pads? Thanks for the help.

Avoid the hot pavement here at all costs! It burns the pads. Walk your dog early in the morning and do not leave them outside for very long during the day. Only long enough to take care of business and then right back in. When the temps are 115 degrees, they can become dehydrated easily! Lots of water to drink, etc. I don't take my dogs in the car at all during the summer unless we are not going in anywhere.
thanks, i know in Alaska we had to use booties in the winter. Was not sure what to do here. My dog is so spoiled staying indoors is his preferred MO.
Know the signs of dehydration---vomiting, loss of energy, dry gums/dry mouth, skin looses elasticity (try pulling the skin around the neck and on the back), eyes sink in or go dry, and capillary bounce back time (press on the gum till it turns white--how long before it goes pink again).....if you see these, especially in combination, go to the vet ASAP!

Don't hesitate in using electrolytes in their water if you feel they aren't drinking enough...

Go for walks/hikes either early in the morning or late afternoon/early evening...

Wetting down of the head, neck and underbelly is another quick way of lowering body temp and easing heat discomfort.

STAY COOL and head for SHADE!! LOL! ;)
