Oh Wow Is All I Can Say

Well I just came home from the vet with Oliver, lol...He needed to get his rabies shot, and he weighed in at 29 3/4 lbs. !!!!!!....He gained 8 1/2 lbs in 2 weeks. !!!!!....The vet said he is not fat, just perfect, lol, I cannot imagine how big he is going to be...Well he is 4 mos old, so I guess double the weight and add ten lbs? I believe that is what you guys said, so he should be 70 lbs...OMG, I look at him now and can't see that, lol...But I am feeding him 2 cups of food in the am, & 2 cups in pm, with some treats in between. The Vet said I should feed him a little more, that at this age he is an eating machine...He gobbles down the 2 cups in no time flat, so maybe I will give him a little more with each feeding...I went to the food group here, and lots of ideas there, so I guess it is like pick and choose and try it with Ollie. I am in the process of taking him off of Purina Puppy Chow something and on to the Canidae that I have used for my other dogs...Great food, the others did wonderful on it, so I am doing 50/50/ at this point....Do you guys think I should just keep food as I am doing or increase it gradually?...I am very confused with this, never had a puppy grow so fast, lol, but he is sooo cute...Oh and we moved his crate in our room, and no more getting up at night, he has slept thru the night the last 2 nights.!!!!!!...He got up at 6:15 am, but that is fine with us from 11 the night before...Ah the joys of puppyhood, lol....Cheryl

Yay for sleeping through the night! I'm so happy to hear that. The doubling the weight thing works but I don't think you necessarily add 10 lbs. I think it's more like up to +10 lbs. Mine only added 5 lbs to the doubling of the 4 month weight and that's him on the edge of chubby.

Thanks Adina, he just doesn't look like he will be that big, lol...But then again he has long legs and big paws, so this should be interesting. When do they reach their final growth? A year? two years? And how much do u feed yours and how much did u feed when they were still growing?...Thanks Adina

Decrease the Purina a little and add more Canidae each day over a period of one week. By the last day, you should be on all Canidae. Expect to have some gas & loose stools for another week or so after he is on 100% Canidae.

The Purina has a bunch of binders and fillers, and once they're removed from the puppy's diet, it usually takes a little time for their immature digestive systems to adjust to processing natural-fiber foods on their own. You may not experience that, which is great, but I like everybody to be prepared, and know that there's nothing wrong with the new food, lol; we've been dealing with this a lot lately in TFG.

Rosco maxed out his weight in month 8. He never got heavier...but maybe a bit taller. Though you may read it takes longer for some...for Rosco he was done with 'weight' growth then. He may have grown 1/2 inch later.

I have no idea how much he ate as a pup honestly. It was 3 yrs ago :) But he eats Canidae ALS now and gets 1.5 cups at noon and 1.5 cups at dinner and he's 3 y.o. and 80-80 lbs.

Max was 20 lbs at 4 mths and now is 30 lbs at 1 yr. His mom is approx 20 lbs and dad approx 40 lbs both ALDs so I figured somewhere inbetween and that's exactly where he is.

My "Bear" seems to be the same age as your Oliver. When was Oliver born? We go to the Vet on Monday for the rabies shot. Bear was 18 pounds three weeks a go and now I wonder if he could be as big as your Oliver. I feed him the same as you do too. I can't believe how fast they grow. I've only had small dogs before and I feel like we can almost watch him grow. Goodluck with the sleeping!

At 16 weeks my pups were at 32lbs and 38 lbs. I was surprised :) I too think we will have big puppies! I think they are gaining between 8 and 10 lbs a month right now!! THey are 20 weeks today.
I am feeding TOTW and they eat about 5 cups a day each with treats and some homemade thrown in or fruits and veggies.

I guess we do have BIG puppies...I love the coats on your dogs, I still can't tell which way Ollie is going to be, right now he looks like a teenage boy with his hair every which way, still has a lot of puppy fur, and I am thinking that he will be shaggy, or slightly wavy, more toward the retriever coat, then the poodle...I am hoping he gets shaggy, that is what I would like, but who knows...He is just a sweet boy, almost housebroken, but not all the way yet, I can tell when he wants to go out, but he doesn't tell us yet, so I watch him like a hawk, and just today, I took my other dog out, cma ine and he had peed on the floor....He knew he was wrong, he ran and hid, or thought he could hide from me, lol...But for the most part he is very good, and we just love him to pieces....For some reason I am unable to post pictures here, have to wait for my son to come and see what I am doing wrong....Cheryl
