When is the right time to switch from puppy food to adult food. I have always heard to do this after the dog is neutered???? I'm not sure if we should be switching over now or not? Thanks?
It depends on several factors, including the expected adult size of the dog and the rate of growth of the individual puppy. Since the age of neutering varies widely, that is not a good guideline. I believe the average age is about 9 months, but I would let my vet advise me on this; most vets advise switching them when they are close to full-size in terms of skeletal growth.
Great question. I asked the vet and they told me that we could switch(depending on the dog food) at about 1 year. I just switched my dog to "Taste of the Wild" dog food two weeks ago and I will keep him on the puppy formula as it is going so well until he is a year old. He is 10 1/2 mths old now and weighs almost 76-80 lbs. Scary as it sounds- I think he is still growing!!
My Vet always recommends switching from Puppy food to Adult around 11 months, by slowly adding a few kibbles and increasing it till your at the right amount for your dogs weight at 1 year old. By gradually changing their food you are decreasing the chances for dietary upset caused from switching foods such as vomiting, runny or loose stools. .
I have my puppy on Taste of the Wild Bison and Venison Flavor that is for All stages of Life. (puppies and adults) Both my dogs love it and it is grain free. It costs a little bit more but you end up feeding the dog less because it is such high quality. I was introduced to this from some other owners on DK.
