Harper started puppy kindergarten this past week, and so far, so good! However, our trainer asked each of us to bring in bite-sized "reward" treats to share with the pups during class. I want to bring in something different than the typical store-bought goodies. Does anyone have any suggestions in terms of home-made, bite-sized treats for puppies?
Cut up chicken weiners and cook them in the toaster oven at 350 degrees until they are a little crispy. This gets extra grease and moisture out of them, and Toby went wild for them. And they are not expensive!
you can cut up pieces of chicken breast, or has been mentioned hot dogs. Actually I prefer to buy treats since I keep them in my pocket. Charlie Bear's are great- tiny and cheap. I buy them at Trader Joe's for $2.99 a bag, the same size bag costs $5.99 at Petsmart
I also have chopped up cheese in little teensy weeensy pea size portions.
If you can find some semi soft treats at the store, then just break them up even smaller by hand ahead of time.
Oh and in our DK Cookbook group (I think) someone posted a recipe for homemade liver treats. If not if you search for liver treats or "homemade liver treats" in the search box in the VERY TOP RIGHT corner of the site you might stumble across where it is.
I found the best "high value" treat for Gracie was little pieces of turkey hotdogs. Now she is on a special diet and we use venison jerky pieces. Look at the DK Cookbook group to see if there are recipes if you want to make something yourself.
I do a combo of small treats and cheerios in my bag so some bites Baxter gets a crunchy reward or sometimes he gets a "tasty" reward. He seems to like it! Not too expensive either
If you feel like cooking, try the liva treats from the DK cook book. We used them in training and Harley just loved them. I kept them in a plastic sandwich bag in my pocket so I wouldn't get crumbs.
Brewster starts puppy class on friday and I made the Liva Treats to use. Instead of making them into balls, I rolled the mixture flat and scored it into tiny pieces before baking. Brewster loves them! And it makes a TON!!
