Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Just came back from the vet. Took Zoe to make sure there was no yeast brewing in her ears since I found much more wax then usual. She has had 1 major ear infection resulting mainly from a reaction to 2 products that were given to her to clear it up. She was allergic to one or the interraction of both. He told me she had no infection, but the wax was due to an allergy ( I really think he felt this after seeing "allergic reaction" on her chart which his vet partner had written.) She has no other allergy symptoms. He recommended Science Diet for Sensitive Skin which his office sells along with other Science Diet brands. She has been on Eagle Pace Holistic, which looks to be a much better rated food and has omegas 6 and 3 also which he said would be the benefit of the Science Diet brand. Eagle Pack has just a smidgen less than the Science Diet in the omega category. Have you ever been told about ear allergies and if so do you have your doodle on a different brand of food to treat the allergy?

Right. It is absolutely amazing how many people blame allergies, usually to food, for everything. Ear infections almost never have anything to do with food.
I certainly have gotten an education from reading these Forum responses this morning. Thanks!
Amen.
I love my vet, and trust him on most things. But he sold me a 6.5 oz bottle of shampoo for $26.00. I later found it available from just about every on-line pet supply site for $13.99.
General practioners refer us to specialists when there is an issue that is beyond their scope. Your gynecologist doesn't treat you for a broken leg, lol. A vet is a primary care doctor for pets; it would be unrealistic to believe they are experts on everything, including diet.
Wow! There is almost too much to comment on in this forum!
I will just add that we just took our very sick Australian Multi-Gen Labradoodle to a holistic vet this past week with hopes of getting his Inflammatory Bowel Disease under control. Anyhow, I mentioned that our dog had been itching his ears lately. She said that when that happens it almost always signifies an allergy! Usually to food! I guess it just depends on which vet you talk to because it's apparent in all of these replies that vets don't agree on this issue.
Hope Zoe's better!
My doodle had reccuring ear infection and luckily I know a wonderful homeopathic vet who suggested cutting out poultry. Apparently alot of allergies are triggered by either wheat or poultry.

I would definately steer clear of the science diet. Very expencive and insures that your dog goes back to the vet again and again with a whole manner of niggling problems. (only my experience, but I've heard this from others).

Maybe try cutting out wheat and poultry, and seek advice from a homeopathic/holistic vet.

I have now switched to all raw food, meat and veggies. Welly LOVES it and I know exactly what's in his food.

Good luck and I hope you get the problem resolved, I know how worrying allergies can be.
