Holly likes just about any type of treat but, her favorite is the Dick Van Patten sausage type roll. We cut it into tiny pieces and the dogs are crazy about it. Each morning as Judy prepares her coffee, she has our four Maltese and Holly sitting for their treats. They each get two small pieces of treat to start their day. If somehow she neglects to do this, all of them remind her what they have coming.
We also use this type of treat in training Holly. Her most recent command that she learned is "Leave It!"
We sit and offer her a small piece on the palm of our hand and say, "Take it!". Then after two treats this way, we close our hand around the treat. Holly will sniff and lick the hand but, the moment she turns away from the hand, we say, "Leave It!" and immediately offer her a treat which we are holding in the other hand. Holly associates the "Leave It!" command with something very positive - getting a treat.
In out Therapy Dog Boot Camp, Holly walks through a "Mine Field" of treats on the floor. If she even looks at a floor treat, we say "Leave It!" and immediately give her a treat we have been holding in her hand. She is doing very well in this maneuver.
This is a great training technique and can be used when in a nursing home if food or even worse a medication pill is lying on the floor. It can also be used to distract Holly from any other unwanted action in any venue.
Ingredients:
3.5 cups of oats
1.5 cups of pumpkin
1/4 cup of applesause (plain)
1 tsp. of vanilla extract
Combine all ingredients. Roll into small balls and place on cookie sheet. Lightly press each ball with a fork. Bake 15 minutes. Let cool and enjoy.
TIP- They're great frozen too, and it takes a little longer for them to eat!
This is how I give it to all my dogs, frozen. They LOVE them!
If you are using canned pumpkin and want to double the recipe, just use the big, 2 pie can instead, and double the other ingredients.
