So we are trying to socialize Piper who is 9 weeks, but everytime he gets around kids or even one kid (other than our own little one) he goes berserk! It doesn't matter how calm the child is, as soon as he sees them he goes crazy and is jumping, biting, tugging on clothes...basically everything we are finally getting control of at home goes totally out the window. Putting him on a leash doesn't help at all. I don't want an anti-social dog, but I don't feel comfortable with him around other kids. And side note, does anyone really get 100 people in 4 weeks to come and see their dog? That seems impossible! Everyone I know would NOT have time for a "puppy party". We have people come over occasionally, but obviously this won't add up to 100.
Our puppy is 19 months old and still does this. I don't know what to do either. She mostly does this with our youngest (5 year old) nephew and the other night she did it with a little brother of my son's friend who came to my door to pick up his brother. I try to get in between them say quiet, settle, go to your pillow, treats, etc. nothing stops her. I have to pick her up and still she "screams" (I call it). She also does this with SOME adult visitors. She just has this fierce sounding bark. Like she's about to attack, but she's all bark. I called behaviorists, but they want $900.00 about to come here....WAY too much for us right now. She's a work in progress. She HAS gotten better, but still has sooooo far to go!
Gracie is the same. When she was a puppy she did this for all visitors. Now, at 20 months, she is better, but still a problem. She does not jump anymore, just bites and/or pulls clothing. At the moment when someone comes over I try to get her to down. I keep her that way till I see that she is calmer (just a minute or two). Then I release her to see the guest. She is still overly excitable but very much improved over a year ago. I agree with the others, she is still a work in progress..........
Training helps this. No need for a behavioralist. Just train all the time. Peri is 7 months and we have really worked with her on basic commands like sit, stay, down, etc...we are in the 2nd level of obedience and our trainer teaches us these commands but concentrates on us using them during distractions. Your Piper is so young, so she will get better. But go ahead and start training her to sit and lie down.
I literally just got back from my lunch break - went home to walk the dogs. I train Peri EVERY TIME I am with her. On a walk, a dog or child passes, I make her sit and stay and give her a treat. Really. It is a pain but I promise it pays off. Just work on it every time you can think about it. Peri now will sit when a visitor walks through the door. Now she doesn't just do it on her own! But when I say "sit" she sits and calms down for me. As Tammy says...always a work in progress...always!!!
