Okay, so here's my question... do any of your doodles have smelly rear ends... I mean like you can smell them when you are standing a distance away from them? As Remington has gotten older we have been struggling with this. We have started wiping his butt after he poops (I know I can't believe we do this either) because he seems to get bits of poop stuck to his fur around that area... we thought that was the problem... but I don't think it is. After months of doing this we still struggle with his smelly rear end. He is constantly biting at his rear end and sniffing it so he obviously knows it doesn't smell good either! Is there anything that can help with this problem????? Does he need and anal gland expression? Do any of you have this problem??? Please say you do so I'm not the only crazy one :)
I haven't had the problem with persistent smell. Sometimes they do need a wipe but if you keep the hair around the area short including under the base of the tail it helps. It sounds like it could be the anal glands which you can have expressed or do yourself. I have never done this myself since my dogs have not had a problem. here is a good explanation: Anal sacs.
Ask your vet or groomer to express his Anal sacs. It is the worst smell in the world...litterally might make you gag. I would/could never do it myself.
ditto ditto ditto to what Yvonne says. I was having this problem with Lucy. Just all of a sudden the butt started stinking. I would wash it, nothing happened. Last week I took both of them to the groomers for just a bath (my back wasn't up to 2 baths). Got them home, Lucy still had a stinky butt! Well, as a result of the trip to the new groomer, she also got an ear infection, so yesterday we went to the vet. I said, "Oh and by the way, she also has a stinky butt ..... could it be her anal glands". Low and behold, it was (size of grape) ........ and now, no more stinky butt! I kept waiting for the smell in the vets office, but I never did smell it. I think the vet may have though. I'm so excited. Will be more excited in 2 weeks when we are finished with all the medicine and drops for the ear infections, but I'm soooooooooo happy that stinky butt is gone! I guess I thought the groomers did that with a bath, but maybe you have to specifically ask and pay an up charge or something!
After researching Anal Glads Expression I found that A) Not all groomers do them and B) Not all groomers know the CORRECT way to do them, therefore causing more harm than good. (Abcess for one) . So when groomer asked about doing it, I said no thanks, that the Vet does it and I'd rather they didn't mess with them. As for ear infection, did they pull ear hair? Some will get infections if that is done incorrectly as well. I am becoming the amateur authority on ear infections as we are dealing with it constantly.
I have never messed too much with the ear hair on either Lucy or Sophie. Sophie doesn't have much. Lucy has quite a bit but all I've ever done is just clip it short with the scissors. I think that is what our regular groomer was doing as well. After this apt with the new groomer (I just went to for a bath only) I did notice that there were some places in her ear that looked sore like she may have started to pull the hair, but I didn't think too much about it until Lucy started in a few days later shaking her head etc. I'm hoping the meds get her feeling better pretty quick.
Yep,my Sheba has smelly butt at times. It seems like every two months she needs to get expressed. (I go to the vet to have it done) I remember the first time I smelled it. (I've had dogs before and never had this problem.) She was laying on the couch beside me and something did not smell right...I thought she had rolled in something. Her glands were so full they leaked on the couch and me! It smelled like dead fish...NASTY! No more dogs on the couch or bed after that! I took her this week to have it done. It took three people to hold her down...my vet said he's never seen a dog jump sideways! When he finished she laid on the floor in the corner while Duke was examined..poor Sheba, she wouldn't look at me for a while after that! I wish they would have checked Duke first because that room smelled really bad, the vet and the tech made comments about how bad it smelled! I really hated to see Sheba react that way...she HATES having this done! I would too!!!!
Yep, your all right, anal glands is my guess. I went through the very same thing with Lucy, STINKY BUTT. I also posted here about it and found it to be her butt. It is the worse smell ever. Can not mistake it. Once the glands are expressed, smell is gone. I found that she was taking care of the problem herself. Happened 2 x's. Keep the fur clipped close around the butt and also the base of the tail to keep dingle berries from sticking there. It helps.
EWWE!YES! It's probably his anal sac that needs expressing. A groomer will do it, or even the vet. It smells fishy, right? Tori has that every so often. Sometimes if I take her out and she has a bowel movement, the "poop" will actually express it enough to stop the smell. I hear some dogs are just "lucky" enough to have sacs that fill up quickly! Actually google it. There is actually a demonstration on line that shows you how to express it yourself, but good luck with that - not for me! I'd rather have the vet do it!
:OP Yuck!
You can change up his food to help with anal gland issues. You can add a meat bone once a week to his diet and unsalted canned green beans a few times a week. Green Beans are a diarrhetic so what his weight to make sure he doesnt loose weight.
Dead fish!!! Hartley seems to empty his on his own, always when he is nervous, so it is always when we are in the car (he is not a lover of the car). I wash his blanket, and a couple of weeks later he does it again... my car stinks for days afterwards!!
I have a question. Does it mean that he has an anal gland problem or just needs an express if he's licking his behind while it's stinking? I know..so gross, but we just started having this problem with Timbow.
