7 month old doodle that loves to chew!

Hey All,
Any ideas of bones etc that are ok for a puppy to chew on?! My 7 month old pup is a chew-aholic and can demolish a bone in about an hour - and then he moves on to our couch cushions, shoes ...

Ive tried the antler thing but he wasn't really into those. I've heard good and bad things about bully sticks but i wasn't really to sure since i believe they contain rawhide which isn't to good for dogs? Right now i give him chews that are wrapped in pig skin and have a hard treat in the middle , but the name escapes me. Anything else i have found is advised only for dogs older than 1 year of age so I'm in a bit of a pickle. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!


*** also note that he is HUGE (over 40 pounds) and already bigger than my bosses full grown standard poodle. So little bones or edible nylabones etc. do NOT work for him :)

Have you tried the Himalayan Yak Milk Chews?? They are a hard chews that come in different sizes, my 8 month doodle can usually make them last a month.  I think there have been previous discussions on here before about them, as I remember reading that when they get really small you can microwave them to make them crunchy and more of a treat then a chew.

I got some Rawsome Bones (the 'o' in Rawsome is a heart) Bison Rib bones, fresh & untreated, frozen. The guy at my local pet shop recommended them to me. Holmes is 12 weeks old and still teething- he loves them and it'll keep him occupied for at least 30 min., plus being frozen I think it helps his teething. He'll continue to chew on them for a while. I'm not sure when I'm supposed to dispose of them...? The pet store guy told me his dog actually eats them, but his dog is bigger & older. 

So... your puppy is still chewing on things at 7 mos.!!!??? I was hoping to be DONE with all this bitey-ness by then!!! LOL :)

I too had a chewer and I mean a CHEWER!   There was nothing Libby would not put in her mouth and tear apart including furniture!  Unfortunately we were not on on DK when going through puppyhood and were at our "wits end"!  We asked our trainer and she advised exercise and lots of it!  So we started walking her two miles a day and sometimes twice a day.The walking really made a difference and wore her out. We bought all kinds of toys for her to chew on and she destroyed them in minutes.  So we went to Nylabones and Kong toys which helped a lot.  We also put old rags into our clothes hamper (I know that sounds wierd) to get the scent of us on them and then tied them in knot for her to chew on and she loved them and kept her busy for hours.  Mostly it was watching over her constantly, using the "leave it" command and lots of exercise.  Puppyhood is a challenge, but also lots of fun and love!

We buy the middle of the leg bone for Meg, bake them or microwave them and she uses them forever, but she also likes antlers.  When the middle of the leg bone is cleaned out Meg likes to get a peanut butter treat in there.

huh, I've never heard of the yak chew or those Rawsome bones, i will definitely look into both and give them a try!! I did try the antlers but he wasn't really into those. He chewed on it for 20 minutes or so and then he was over it - hasn't touched it since. i do try and give him plenty of exercise since i work all day. Walking is def. still a work in progress with him - he's a major leash puller! And we have gotten freak amounts of snow where i am , so it didn't make taking the dog out very easy! Praise the Lord its almost Summer! :)

Don't worry the bitty-ness gets better once all those sharp baby teeth come out! Silas went through a lull after he lost all his teeth and then randomly started back up with psycho chewing when he hit 6 months...im hoping its just a stage haha

Hi Brittany - you might try the Easy Walk Harness which has the leash clip in the front.  I think other on here use them.  It is easier on them and you do not have to worry about injuring his neck that way.  My 7 mo. old chews bully sticks which I buy from bestbullysticks.com or discountpetdirect.com.  He has gone through several chewing stages.  I hope this i the last one! LOL  I usually buy the extra thick ones - 50 at a time.  My 2 year old still likes to chew them occassionally, but not like when a puppy.

I have used bully sticks, the odorless ones, to keep my now 9 month doodle occupied and out of trouble.  He also likes to chew on rope tug toys and of course, the indestructible kongs which he has in all sizes. He destroys most other types, although some of his favorites have survived since we first got him.

You can buy bully sticks on line for a reasonable price if you buy in bulk (bestbullysticks.com) .  the braided ones last awhile as do the super thick ones. just look for odorless (which is sometimes just less smelly) 

Every time he has something he should not be chewing on, bring him something that is safe for him and "trade".  Eventually, he will get the idea, as Quince has MOST of the time.

i didn't find it shocking my dog likes to chew...i just needed some friendly help in finding age appropriate alternatives instead of my shoe... Most bones in the store are for dogs that are 1+ - which he is not - so he cannot have them....

I did like this video.  Do you have an antler like this?  Some in the pet stores--not so hot, but we gave you two links here www.bullysticks.com and www.doggyloot.com where good antlers can be purchased an for a lot less than the pet stores

Here is my favorite--cheap and effective--plain (no filling--yuck!) cow hooves---my dogs love them--just keep an eye on the pooch because sometimes really strong chewers can break off sharp pieces--time to practice the "drop it" command!
