Barkley came from the rescue with his name. It sounded original enough and I liked it (we also had Bristow from the shelter, not a doodle, his name stuck with him too!) Barkley lives up to his name as he can be quite the barker - when he's happy, when he sees something out in the yard, when the wind blows just the right way and makes a noise. Many people comment on how his name fits him (those rescue people are smart!) ;)
Before we got Gracie, I listed out a bunch of names and we couldn't agree on any of them. I also like to take a poll to see what people like, well the only one my husband would agree on was Grace or Gracie. So, Gracie it is. Now, unlike Barkley, I don't think she is very graceful. But, she is her daddy's princess, so I guess the name fits! :D
With Jade, I picked her due to her personality and wanted to name her Clarabelle, a sweet kind name. But, my husband kept saying all sorts of different things. Jade was another name I had picked and I liked it, but kind of just sounded plain. Now, I think it fits her really well. My husband could remember it and so we went with it!
The only problem we have is that we often say Gracie..Jade before we get to her name. LOL
Geez, all this makes me wish I had a great story to go with picking my two's names. With Murphy we made up a long list of names we liked the sounds of, and Murphy was our favorite. Funny though that when we went to the airport to pick him up, we met our now good friends who were picking up Murphy's brother, as they came in the same crate. She too had named her doodle Murphy. So both are named Murphy and I think April said there were another one or two from the same litter named Murphy as well. Just a popular name that year, kind of like naming children, it has trends.
As for Bella. One look at her and that name came to mind and nothing else ever seemed better. She is truly a beauty so her name is very fitting.
Other doodles in the family, (daughter's) are Marley and Hershel. I think one is a sports person of some sort. lol
So who got to keep the crate? Did you have to flip a coin?
Funny that you would think of that. We decided I could take it as she already had a wire crate from her first dog and didn't crate that dog any longer. We are truly very close friends now, which is a wonderful benefit of being doodle litter mate owners. Its so fun to compare them, and they are very different. We each got exactly the personality types we asked for and what April told us they would be like.
I really wanted a doodle from April. She is close by me, but her wait lists fill up quick and are so long to wait. At the time I wanted instant gratification. If I ever get a second one, I would be willing to wait.
I know that my third doodle will also be from April. She has smaller multigens now. I too would be willing to wait.
But I am hoping she is still doing doodles by then because I know we won't be getting another one until one of our two are gone and we pray that won't be for at least 5-6 more years. But who knows, her dogs are so darn healthy, maybe they will break the records for oldest doodles and live to be 20 years old !!! A doodle mom can dream can't she?
Fun discussion! When I retired from working ten years ago we knew it was time to get a puppy - I had always wanted a dog named Zak and still really wanted to call our female goldendoodle Zak but it was so obviously a male name. My DH came up with the name Zakita, which I still think sounds so pretty. Unfortunately, Zak died of EPI at the young age of five, which devastated us. Because we absolutely loved the breed and the temperament, we put our name on the waiting list for another doodle but really had a hard time deciding on a name. I had lists and lists, names that I liked DH didn't and vice versa. I think deciding on a name was the most stressful thing about getting the puppy. By this time, I had discovered DK and so I asked DK'ers for suggestions. Jennifer, of Jennifer, Chloe and Myla posted that she named her dog Myla, because it stood for "My Little Angel" and that really spoke to me, mainly because we were still dealing with the heartbreak of losing Zak, who we still believe is looking over our Myla from heaven. As soon as I told DH about the post, he loved the name and it's meaning also. To us, it's a beautiful name for our dog and a fitting tribute to our Zak!
I've always liked the name Winnie. It reminds me of Winnie Cooper-the sweet little love interest of Kevin from the TV show The Wonder Years. She was a very kind, soft-spoken and beautiful young girl.
When we went to pickup our puppy, we were deciding between the name Winnie and one other name (I can't even remember what name that was!). So, we asked the breeder which name she felt matched the puppy's personality and she immediately said, "Ohhhh, she's a Winnie!!" :-)
I used to call my wonderful lab Ellie "Ellie-Belle." After she died last year, I decided my next dog would be a mini labradoodle, to keep a bit of Ellie in my life. I thought about naming the puppy Belle but decided that might be too maudlin, and made a list of alternate names based on sounds and meanings. When I went to pick up my labradoodle pup, the breeder said her name, after her father Rebel With a Cauz, was Rebel Belle, so clearly Belle was meant to be. I like the name because it generates lovely nicknames. During the holidays she was Jingle Belle, and when she misbehaves she is Stinkerbelle, etc, etc....
Nice that you kept a bit of Ellie alive with Belle. I love "Stinkerbelle" . I can see me calling my Bella Stinkerbella!!!
Eloise was named for the storybook character Eloise, one of my very favorite children's books. For the longest time, I wanted to name a dog Scout (from To Kill a Mockingbird) - but while I was on the waiting list for my Goldendoodle girl, the name Eloise came to me and I knew that had to be her name. Before she was even born she was Eloise, and her name just fits her perfectly.
I had a list of names a mile long for Miss Beasley but I couldn't settle on anything. I thought I'd name the second puppy Scout, until I said it out loud and Eloise evidently thought I said "cat" (a very, very bad word per Eloise) and she started barking like she does every time she hears "cat" or sees a cat. My breeder actually had the idea of Mrs. Beasley, as I wanted a name that went with Eloise. I'd never seen the show "Family Affair," but I knew Mrs. Beasley was the doll that the little girl Buffy carried around. Buffy just happened to be the name of my childhood dog - and that was the connection that did it for me. I modified it to Miss Beasley since puppy Beasley was too young to be Mrs, lol.
I was saddened yesterday when I read the news of Harper Lee's passing, and then I thought about Scout. (Harper was also on the short list for both girls.) I said it out loud in front of Eloise just to see what she'd do - and sure enough, she started growling and barked. That's Eloise! Silly girl.
