Every single day, Jane.
And I know they are the lucky ones, because they have us, but it still makes me sad that Jackdoodle, Stuart, and all the rescue dogs from unknown backgrounds didn't have the kind of beginnings we would have wanted for them.
At least you'll have puppy pictures. :)
Jane I feel this way about Gracie, one of my Frenchies. I got her when she was 18 months. I found her on Craigs list at a cut rate for a frenchie and I was horrified at what could happen to her so I' was determined to get her even I couldn't keep her. I am her 3rd mom. The folks who had her before kept her for 10 days. She wasn't telling them she had to go to the bathroom. These folks got her from a breeder in Arizona. Supposedly AKC - no papers. Had an "accidental" litter before she was 1 year. She was in heat when I got her. Had awful allergies - much worse than I was led to believe. And doesn't bark - which her previous owners didn't mention and was not on the info sheet. They might have not known - but it wasn't passed on from breeder. Was she born that way - was she debarked?????
When I got her home, I showed her the dog door and out she went - no accidents. Of course she couldn't tell them she needed to go out - she was dog door trained and can't speak. She is the sweetest dog ever. Loves people and other dogs. I am so thankful to have her but am so sad that she was passed around like she didn't matter.
Our Othello was being given away on Craigslist for Free!! I was still very much grieving the loss of our dear pet (it had only been a week) when a friend just kept saying you have to see if you can get him...what if someone awful gets their hands on him...so after meeting Othello and his former "people" (I refuse to call them his family as good families do not give away their members....not for any reason!) for less than an hour they simpl6y said, "well, are you taking him tonight?/", no references nothing, my husband just shook his head and said yes, we are taking him immediately.
He is the most wonderful boy, smart, loving, playful, kind, friendly to everyone, except wild rabbits, etc. We often wonder about the way he was treated, when he first came into our home helaid in the kitchen and would not leave the room without coaxing, he was head shy (we think they "hit" him with newspaper over the head when he misbehaved, but he is coming out of it), he seemed genuinely timid about sleeping on a doggie bed in our bedroom, etc. I know they were his original owners, we saw the "receipt" for the purchase of him from a breeder, we know he was never on a leash, we know he was taught some basics, we are also pretty sure he was treated as an inconvenience instead of as a beloved member of the family, we know that he was left outside for two weeks 24/7 prior to our taking him in, he was tick infested. he was hungry, and he LOVES being in a family now!! It makes me sad that his beginning was a mixed bag instead of the happy life he so deserves....
And his beginning was better than poor Ophelia's was, we adopted our little Chi-weenie about 2 weeks ago and I cannot even fathom what went on there....suffice it to say she spent the bulk of her day (up to 20 hours a day) in her "kennel", which was actually a small carrier...need I go on??
I am deeply saddened for all of the furbabies who cannot speak for themselves and pass through this life without the benefit of real love...it is so wrong and so sad.
