Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Two days ago on Thursday I spoke with ________ Kennel about adopting a Goldendoodle that she took back and needed to be rehomed because the previous owners had some family problems.  It was agreed that my family would take the 3 hour trip to PA to see Murphy (the Goldendoodle) and if all went well, take Murphy home.  The night before my wife and son and I were in Petsmart buying basic supplies in anticipation of bringing home Murphy.  While in the store I got a call from __________ telling me she had bad news, she had sold Murphy to someone else.  She said she was sorry but that's the way it was.  Imagine our shock.  My son was devastated.  It's one thing to tell a prospective buyer another buyer had first option to purchase a dog.  It's quite another thing to stay silent and cover all bets, tell everyone what they want to hear and then break the news to the unfortunate losers.  I'm not sure what kind of breeder _________ and _________ Kennel is but as business people they are disreputable and unethical.  A word to the wise for anyone considering buying from this breeder.

Out of curiosity I went to their website. They still say they have a nine month old rehome pup, must be the same one, if so they need to remove that info. She also is dishing on mini goldendoodles...not to professional in my eyes.
There is also no mention of any kind of health testing on the breeding dogs, nor any information on them, which is a big red flag.

They do say they offer a 2 year health guarantee though, and they are raised in the home, which is good

They also say - Our Goldens and Poodles have their hip, eye and heart health clearances.

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your family. I know I would have been devastated if this had happened when we were ready to pick up Tara. Thanks for passing along the information.

I hope you don't mind my input here, BonneBouche is from, as well as a handful of other pups here on DK.

While I have mixed, my feelings toward __________ and the operation she runs is generally positive.

1) Her website is habitually outdated, for months after she had told me of BB's litter, the website had notifications of "no new puppies" six months ago... In recent checks, it continues to not be very current.

2) She does have a 2 year health guarantee, and both parents are health tested for the typical GD tests. She guaranteed me that the Dam and Sire both passed, I never saw the actual papers (never asked, but wished I did in retrospect).

3) what she did to you and your family is clearly unethical, and wrong. In my own experience, on the day of our "choice" I felt that we were rushed, and that she deals with people to just "get in and out" I can see where you are coming from with the more "business" and less "family/touchy feely".

In addition, as a breeder, I recall our conversations, she would not "hold" a puppy until she had the deposit in hand. From my understanding this is typical. While I know nothing of your arrangements, her typical MO is probably that of the "first come, first served". Which in standard situations is pretty normal.

I don't know ________ Kennel from Adam's off ox, but a breeder has an obligation to place the right dog in the right home.  I'm sorry for your disappointment but if another buyer came along and was an excellent fit for the dog, then I have no issue with the breeder selling the dog to that buyer.  After all, even if you had driven 3 hours, things might not have gone all that well and either you or the breeder may have said that the 9 month old Doodle was not the right dog for your family.

Regardless of how puppy sales are run now days via the Internet, dogs are not like sweaters.  You can not just get one in the color and size you want whenever you want.  Dogs and puppies are living creatures with needs of their own.   As a buyer, you also deserve to get a puppy who will meet your family's needs.  Impulse buying services no one.

My advice is to step back and do a little more detailed search for the right dog.  As far as ______'s quality as a breeder, well if they have been "breeding Goldens for 25 years", they don't have much to show for it (25 years in a breed you should have Champion or performance titled dogs!).  I always look for breeders who show me why their dogs are breeding quality.  You don't see ANY information on this site about their parent dogs: testing, AKC registered names, pedigrees, titles or certifications.

Have to disagree with you a little on this Carol. I think they're more upset that they weren't even given the chance to find out if they were the right fit after she agreed meet them and they were going to drive 3 hours. She could have very easily told the one she thought was the right fit, that if Larry's family didn't work out they would have first chance. Would have waiting another day hurt.

Glad you brought that up, Adina--i was just going to!

So sorry! Just awful!!
This is quite a disappointment for your family. I am sorry that the kennel owner wasn't up front with you at the outset.
