Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hello Midas is almost 2 year old goldendoodle. Last Sunday we took him for the first time to this indoor dog park. He played for about a half hour and then some dogs weren't so nice so we left. Then we went to the outdoor dog park we always go to and played there for a while. He was fine all week. Then yesterday morning I drove him to the groomers and as soon as he got out of the car he got very excited, pulled a little (always does) no more then usual. And I started to hear a coughing hacking sort of noise. Not sure if I'm describing it well. Then he calmed down and it stopped, then the groomer came out and he got excited again and it started happening again, then he calmed down and it stopped. He came home from groomer was perfect. Then my friend came over later on and he got excited and it happened again, and then again when I came in later that night and when my husband came in and then it stopped. He is eating and acting normal playing running normal stuff. So last night was fine and we went to bed, this morning about 6/7 I woke up to him doing it again. He wasn't excite because he was just waking up.. It went on for about a minute. He has done it a few more times this morning. I'm wondering if he really could have gotten kennel cough that quick at the dog park, and he is up to date on shots I heard it doesn't prevent only lessens the risk of getting kennel cough. I'm also concerned about it being tracheal collapse, I don't know how to tell the difference. I'm worried because my husband left to plow snow and the roads are getting bad by m, I'm not sure I can get him to the vet today. Any advice experiences or maybe what it sounds like? anything would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

MIDAS VIDEO...PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK
It sure sounds like kennel cough to me, but I wouldn't know the difference between that and a tracheal problem. Lucy had it (kennel cough) last year and it seemed to come on suddenly with intermittent coughing spells (that did indeed sound like a seal's bark - it was loud and disturbing). There was also small amounts of clear foamy mucous she coughed up. She had no other symptoms as I recall. She'd also had the vaccine earlier that year. A round of antibiotics cleared it right up.
I did have a dog that coughed for a few days because she was left with me with just a collar and not her harness--she was not used to pulling on a collar and had a bit of a cough for a day or so (I got her harness after just 24 hours of using a collar). That was a very shallow cough, like one would get at the end of a cold, whereas Kennel cough can be deep and sound mucus-y as others have said. But KC is just like a cold as far as severity--if that is what he has, a few days on the Antibiotic and he will be fine. And waiting until the weather clears will not cause too much harm, if any at all.
They can still get kennel cough even if they are vaccinated. We've had it twice. The first time I heard the noise, I thought something was stuck in Monty's throat. He was coughing more when he was moving faster or was excited. Watch for worsening when Midas coughs even when he is not excited. He would also be a bit lethargic and then there was the foamy stuff. The incubation period is usually 5 days if I remember correctly, so that's about right.

here is the video i took of Midas... tell me what you think please
Sounds like the beginning of a kennel cough to me. But I would not know how tracheal problems sound.
The video sounds more like a "reverse sneeze" to me. He doesn't appear to be truly coughing or gagging (his mouth looks closed).
Watch this and see if it is similar:

Kennel cough sounds more like a gagging/honking sound
Sorry, but it's definitely not reversed sneezing. If that happens, the dog freezes with his head down and inhales fast several times in a row. It's something totally different.
The kennel cough starts with few subtle coughs. Monty's started the same way in an evening, and by the morning, he was truly coughing and gagging big time.
LOL, I just demonstrated the difference to my husband and he patted me on the head and said I should put it on the video for other people to watch. Sorry, I'm not going to do that. :-)
Chels, I would watch Midas tomorrow to see how he is doing. If he is still hacking and it seems worse, I would take him to see the vet on Monday.
