Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello, new member here. I posted this in a minidoodle forum but noticed its not very active so thought I would try here.

Last week my DH and I adopted a puppy from a local rescue. His story was that he had been rescued from a breeder who was "trying" to breed mini golden doodles. Unfortunately she got sick and had to part with some of her dogs She claims this little guy was from a small golden retriever (40lbs) and a miniature poodle (20lbs). He is about 13 - 14 weeks old and weighs 10.4 lbs. He had to have all his hair cut off because when he was rescued he was very matted. This picture shows him the day he was rescued (on the left) with all his hair and his profile picture was taken yesterday. He is white mainly with pale golden ears, gold around his mouth and a pale cream/gold running down his back. Now short, his hair is fairly curly but the hair on his legs seems straighter. Sadly the breeder must have docked his tail as its only about 3" long (sorry, but what was she thinking this is illegal where I come from). Of course, it doesn't really matter what he is as we adore him already. I was hoping for a doodle as I have had wonderful golden retrievers in the past and I am crazy about all things golden or doodle:) Is there any way to tell what he is apart from a DNA test? Let me know what you think and thanks for your help.

Gorgeous picture of Spud behind the wheel.  How do you reach the gas pedal Spud?

I'm not an expert but to me he looks like a doodle.

Thank you for rescueing him.  I'm sure you will bring each other many years of happiness!!!

Looks like a doodle to me.  Thank you for rescuing him and Welcome to DK :)   He is cute as pie!

Thanks so much for all your responses and for welcoming us to DK.
I am glad the consensus is that CJ is a doodle but now I am worried he may not get much bigger:)
The rescuer's vet saw him last week and guesstimated his age at about 14 weeks. I thought they looked at their teeth to make an estimate and they mentioned one of his puppy teeth was lose the day he was neutered but they decided not to pull it. I found a tooth in his bed a couple of days ago but of course I don't know if this is the first to fall out or the last:) The rest are pretty sharp. It looks there are a few adult teeth coming through but they are still small.
He certainly acts like a puppy - he whines when left alone and falls asleep at the drop of a hat. But it's been 16 years since I raised a couple of puppies so its all a bit fuzzy. My DH wanted a bigger dog as we had golden retrievers before. Not sure I am going to be able to persuade him to walk a 10lb dog out in public:) It would be good if he at least doubles in size - he must still have SOME growing do.

I'm sure he does.

If he is losing his teeth then he is not as old as he looks! My guys didn't have as much coat at that age but doodles coats very remarkably.

14 weeks would be early for a dog to lose it's teeth.  So he might be closer to 5 months old but still definitely a puppy and still has some growing to do.  Congrats and thanks for giving him his forever home.

Tara is a mini ALD and she weighed 10.2 pounds when she was 14 weeks old. She is now 3 years old and is 20 pounds (currently 22 pounds but on a DIET!)  My DH wanted a larger dog too but he is absolutely smitten with Tara so give it time and little CJ will win him over!   We have found this size to be great for us because she is large enough to keep up on hikes and outdoor activities but small enough to be a lap dog. :)Enjoy your new baby! He's a doll!!

He does look very doodle-y! And technically, a cockapoo is a doodle, they just didn't think of calling them cock-a-doodles when they first started breeding them--but they are poodle mixes after all! This is a great looking puppy--but again, the docked tail is a mystery--Cockers have docked tails, so i am thinking that maybe this IS a cockapoo--but the mini GD's and mini-LDs often look very similar to Cockapoos--so who knows and who really cares!? He is cute and has a lovely coat--that is great for you!!

If he is 14 weeks, then you can double his weight at 16 weeks and that will be within a few pounds of his adult weight--so maybe 22 or 23 pounds--which makes perfect sense with the parents he had. If he is quite a bit older, then he is awfully small--so I think the age might be right--he just has a full coat.

Welcome to DK and good luck with your new pup!

He does look doodlish but he also looks older, his hair is very long for that age. His ears are the same color as Quincy's with those apricot tips. Enjoy him, he is adorable and thank you so much for giving him a new lease on life.

I was thinking the same thing, Donna, that he is probably older with that coat. He sure is cute! Welcome to DK, Stephanie and CJ!

Congratulations!  He looks like a real doll!
