My couch is leather (Meg is a heavy shedder and I don't think I would want her up on a fabric couch). She does come up and I have a fluffy rug on the middle cushion for her to lay on. If she gets warm and no on is on the third cushion she likes to move to that. She is not allowed to play on the couch and she can not have a chew toy there, in fact she is only allowed on when one of us is there and she can come up and cuddle. When she has the crazies and chasing toys she sometimes stops her self by bracing her front feet on the couch to stop or turn...makes me nervous but so far no damage from it and she is about 58 #'s right now.
We have a 9 month and a 3 month old Labradoodle. While the 3 month is just getting around to "climbing" on the furniture, the big one 'sails' through the air from couch to recliner to love seat. While we have been worried about it, to this point we have not experienced any tears or scratches on the furniture. I cannot tell you for sure that they will not damage the leather, but we have not experienced any to this point..... We do get the larger ones nails trimmed and polished every so often..... his monthly pawdicure..... ;-)
No problem with two on the leather couches at my house.
You have to decide what is more important to you...the ability to snuggle on a leather couch or no scratches on it. IMO scratches make the couch look beautiful as long as a doodle is on it!
Seriously though, my daughter has a gorgeous red leather couch, her pups are allowed on it and it does have scratches but it just adds character. I think it needs to be a soft leather couch though, the stiff ones wouldn't get the same results.
we have two leather sofas and all the dogs are up there on occasion. We have a throw and they know when they are on the sofas, they have to be on the throw. Sometimes everything get messed up and they wind up on the leather. No scratches or tears. As someone else said, they can't have toys, treats or chews. The sofas are for a nap or snuggling, playing is on the floor.
No problem with our leather couches. We bought couches recently and got them in leather specifically thinking about the dog (hair doesn't stick to leather!)
Stuart is pushing 70 lbs, Rooney around 23 lbs and they are both allowed on the custom leather sectional. No scratches at all but we do get their nails trimmed every 4 weeks and I do think the quality of the leather is a factor.
Your furniture needs to match your preferred lifestyle. Yes, I would love something different in our family room, but I also like not caring if Charlie is on the furniture-- walking on the top, giving it a scratch/dig now and then, and general raucous-ness. So it's old, dark colored furniture to hide the doodle dirt.
Yes, we have the same issue with Reilly. Luckily she doesn't seem to scratch our nice white leather couch in the living room. However, on our brown leather couch we have tons of scratches, she especially likes to scratch and make a bit of a scene if she wants our attention. Since this couch is older though its not that big of a deal.
Our leather couch doesn't seem to be showing any damage from doodles on board.
We used to have a bargain (bought at an outlet store) Italian Leather loveseat. It looked as good as new even after 10 years when the frame actually broke. So we thought we would replace with another leather couch and while we were at it replaced the living room couches with leather. These were expensive leather couches and the salesman assured me that I had chosen pet friendly leather. NOT! All three show nail scratches. I am sooooo very disappointed in them. I love leather, but need better guidance as to pet friendly.
