Postal workers express sympathy, compassion
Accompanied by a family friend, 4-year-old Anna Baker sat in her family’s car at a veterinary clinic while her parents and brother went inside with “Jack,” their pet golden retriever.
Ted and Rebecca Baker and their son, Daniel, 8, took the loving 9-year-old dog that the couple had acquired as a puppy, inside for the heart-wrenching task of having him euthanized because of cancer.
“When we came back into the car,” said Anna’s mom, “she realized Jack wasn’t with us. I think she expected Jack would be back in the car with us and be better.”
Anna cried uncontrollably for hours. As the family tried to find a way to console the little girl as they put her to bed, Anna said she needed to write a letter to her dog.
The next morning, Jan. 12, she drew a picture of her family and placed it in an envelope addressed to “Jack in Heaven.”
Anna and her mom stepped to their mailbox just as their letter carrier, known only to them as “Amanda,” arrived. The next day, another familiar postal carrier, “Patricia,” said they could expect to receive a package in a few days.
A couple days later, a U.S. Postal Service supervisor who only identified himself as “Dave” arrived with a box bearing the words, “From Jack in Heaven.”
Promise delivered.
The contents brought Rebecca Baker to tears.
The Dear Anna letter, “written by” Jack, said he had arrived safely; that he and the other dogs play ball and swim all day. There are many squirrels to chase, and all the mail carriers have Milk Bones in their bags for them.
“Although my bed isn’t as comfy as your’s, I want you to know that I am OK in the safe hands of God. I was very happy to receive the picture that you made for me,” the letter states.
“I miss my family and I miss you,” it continues. “God sends his blessing and wants you to know that he loves you very much. We will be watching over you every day. Love always, Jack.”
Included in the box from Jack was a book about a dog being put down, and a stuffed animal golden retriever.
Mrs. Baker read the letter to Anna. The items lifted her daughter’s spirits, leaving her amazed.
Like getting a letter from Santa Claus.
“She really believed this came from Jack in heaven,” Baker said.
Daniel also has struggled to cope with the loss of Jack.
“He was his best friend. He would come home (from school) and tell Jack about his day,” his mother said.
The unexpected kindness and caring shown by the postal workers has deeply affected the Bakers.
“I was so touched that somebody we don’t know would care so much about my child and what she’s going through, that they would do something like this to help her,” she said. “Those people have touched me like I can’t even express.”
Anna carries her new pet stuffed animal everywhere. Asked what name she has in mind for it, her answer was simple.
“Jack.”
