Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Can anyone tell me the differences between these two types of dogs (temperament wise)? We will eventually be getting a Goldendoodle but my first love is a English Golden Retriever. My dh is not a fan of dogs but has met several Goldendoodles that he likes and they don't shed nearly as much as the Goldens. So, we have decided on a Goldendoodle. :) I'm excited! I just would like to know how different the temperaments are. Anyone know? Thanks for your input.

Add poodle. Read up on the temperaments on both breeds and you can get anywhere inbetween and extremes from one side or the other.
With my two Doodles I would say Hannah is more the Poodle type temperment...she is very timid and reserved, easily trained, loves to be loved and share love, but I never count her out to amaze me. Honey on the other hand has that develish Golden side to her, the rowdiness and exuberant jumping, she is best paper shredder around, and will work for food.) , Mouthiness -- carrying and chewing objects. Now she is not always A.D.D. cause she really had a rough start in life as my best friend reminds me. She has improved so much over the last 8 months
In the end...a dogs temperment becomes what you train it to be...
Meet parents of said off spring. Parent dogs do have something to do with the type of personality a puppy has. it is not the be all and end all though, nor is it an exact science. Training and SOCIALIZATION are very important. If you can't put all the effort into socializing the dog and basic obedience when he is 8wks and for atleast the first year ( 15 or so after that as well) it may not be the time to get one.
There are breeders who breed goldendoodles from English golden retriever studs or dams..so you might want to steer that direction in choosing a breeder. And yes I second what was said above: Add poodle in your researching temperaments....if you like what you read about standard poodles you shouldn't be disappointed. AND...meet the parents...be sure you like them as they will contribute a lot to your puppy one way or the other.
You should get an English goldendoodle. I have both an English Cream Golden and her daughter, an English goldendoodle. In general, the English are a bit shorter, stockier and a bit more laid back. Because many of the English need to be imported, they are harder to find, and are more expensive. You are welcome to email me or call if you want to "chat." I'm too tired to type more tonight. :o) There are many great breeders that have English pups. Check the DK breeders groups. Oh and temperament wise....I'd say my English GD is a little more out going and affectionate then my English retriever is. Both are great though!
Thank you so much for all your input. I agree with what you said Lorraine, about training and socialization. That's one reason we don't have a puppy yet. I'm really hoping that within the next 6-12 months we will be able to get one though. Keep your fingers crossed. :)
I don't know how much of a dogs personality is from the breed or from his home he grows up in. My dogs (shepherd mix, golden/border collie mix, goldendoodle) are each individuals but are all laid-back, well mannered, and smart. The golden came from the pound, the shepherd was abandoned on the road, and my 6 month goldendoodle I picked out from a litter of 10. There are traits that are more common in some breeds then others but with goldendoodles, the 2 poodle and golden retriever breeds compliment each other. I think you can easily find a pup that has the personality you love, especially if you encourage that personality in your treatment and training of the pup. Have fun with your puppy!
I love Golden Retrievers but, I like Doodles better! Obviously I do, that is why we, after much research, picked our Goldendoodle, Holly, as our big dog.

For folks who are not sure exactly what the "English" version of the Golden Retriever is; see this breeder's web site. It explains sme of the differences between the two varieties of Goldens.

I am not sure at all if there is any difference between a Goldendoodle from English Golden Retriever or the American variety stock.

Golden Retrievers as well as Labradors (and there are English and American versions of these dogs too) mix very well with other breeds.

We think that our Holly is the best dog we have ever owned. However, we had a Golden Retriever - German Shepherd - Wolf hybrid, named Sara Lee, that was also a magnificent dog. We wanted a dog that had many of the tendencies of a Golden (especially friendliness towards people and other dogs) yet, had a few differences; namely less shedding and a better watchdog than a purebred Golden.

Our daughter had a English Stock Golden Retriever that was an absolutely sweet dog. However, it was so friendly that it was less than useless as a watch dog. Our daughter gave their television to a friend and loaned a key to their home to the friend so he could stop by and pick up the TV while they were gone. Their Golden didn't know the friend but, licked his hand as he was removing the television. We wanted a dog that would be slightly more imposing than that!

Holly is definitely not a guard dog but, she is a great watch dog. Holly lets strangers know in no uncertain terms that they are not welcome in the house or yard. When people see a 60-pound dog barking, they take note. Especially since many folks mistake Holly for a Wheaton Terrier which are pretty darn good guard dogs.
I have a SUPER-Watchdog too. It was not something I planned for, but I guess I am pleased about it. I am trying to modulate it though because I don't like being woken up at 1 am when people walk past my house on Sat night. Apparently, my street is a great connector between the bars in the village and houses higher up on my hill.

The funny thing is that Porter sounds so fierce...growl woo wooo woooooo, growl; but when non-family members actually ENTER the house unexpectedly, he alternates between the scary noises and scampering away and peeing. He'll pee that robber to death! The big guy was known as the most timid and submissive puppy in the litter and at 9 mos he is still finding his "tough guy" persona...well, he has it around other dogs, but humans; he reserves judgment.
Peri is the worst watchdog on planet earth! She would roll over and submit to anyone! Ha! Isn't it funny how they are so different!
Yeah, we're teaching Porter to sit when he greets people...no petting until he sits (helps a liiiiittle with the jumping). So he would likely woo woo, sprinkle some drops of pee, then sit at the burglers feet, perhaps nudge the guy's hand with his head a bit too.
I would imagine that both breeds are pretty much the same as for temperment and disposition. I think it would end up coming down to which breed you like the most. Almond Blossom Doodles in California has some of the most beautiful Enlgish Goldendoodles. I don't have one from them but I really wanted one. Bear is not English but he is laidback, smart, a protector, and all around awesome. Wouldn't trade him for anything. Goodluck on your choice!
