I have an 8 month pup. He has never had a hair cut because my husband loves his long wavy look. While he is super cute, I think he should have a summer cut. My groomer says the only option is a 1.5" clipper cutter. Is this true? Any suggestions... What is best? Thanks.

I wonder why is that the only option? He should be able to get any hair cut he wants..?

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm not sure what length to ask for since I never had a GD before. The groomer said any other length would have to be hand cut. In other words, he has curly hair underneath and straight hair at the end. He is an F1b. Am I making any sense? I don't want him to look too shaved down.

I think if you go to the grooming group, there may be a pictures of various cut posted there. Or may be you can Google " Goldendoodle Haircut",  print out the picture you like, and take it to the groomer.

My Charlie has very thick curly coat on her body, and she hates to be brushed. Her legs are rather fleecy and loose. I love fluffy dog and the softness of her coat. So, I resulted in the poodle puppy cut. She does not look like doodle and looks like a poodle, but this was our happy medium.... I think her groomer uses clipper for the body and scissor cut the legs, head, etc...

Appreciate the suggestion... :-). Kyoto is beautiful.

Thank you, that's me...LOL :-) The dog is Charlie... LOL....

Oops!!!!! I am sure you are beautiful as well! Thanks for directing me to the grooming group... I am a new member and didn't realize it was there. Perfect resource.
Is it because your groomer doesn't want to take the time to use scissors. Is this a groomer you've used before? I'd ask what difference in price would it be. I've had a few bad experiences with lazy or what I consider production line places. Definitely check out the grooming group. There should be a guide you can print out and take with you.

Yes, it's true that the longest clipper cut is 1.5" long. That is the longest clipper attachment that groomers use I believe. If you want a longer cut, you could ask the groomer if they do hand scissoring, however that would be more expensive by quite a bit.

Summer cuts aren't necessary - many have found that their dogs are not any cooler after a shave down, but I usually have Darwin shaved down 2 times per year. This is due to the tediousness of brushing his coat when it's longer. I always have them shave him down to about 1", it grows back fast!

You can get a scissor cut for any length, but as mentioned it's more expensive because it is time consuming.  If he has any matting, they are going to want to shave.  Make it very clear if you don't want him shaved.  We had to have our then 11 month shaved because, despite my efforts to keep him brushed, his adult coat came in and he matted really bad behind his ears, armpits and even his belly.  It's been a few weeks, and he looks great - long and lanky!  More importantly, he is easy to brush and keep mat free.  Good luck!

We usually have Milo scissor cut....well, sort of.  In the picture, we had them use the trimmers on his body at 1 inch.  Then scissor is legs and head in - the legs are about 2 inches.  It takes about 2 times as long (about 1.5 hours), but we like the outcome.  Recently we went to 3/4 of in inch on the body with the legs & head scissored in - we generally like it this length now.

This is Charlie's cut too- I love it! Legs don't seem to mat as easily as the body, it gives us bang for the grooming buck (it takes awhile to grow out), and it's cute!

OMD...Milo is gorgeous!  What a beautiful cut too!

My doodles get clipped to 1" because their hair grows SO fast!  That way I get maximum value for the expensive grooming!  Plus I think they look adorable!
