Yesterday I had a massive headache, Bodi and DH were fine.  This morning I still had the headache - until I got to school - then it went away . . . when I got home I smelled gas.  We called the gas company and waited out in the OHIO COLD for him to come.  We have a gas leak and we are SAFE as the gas has been turned off.

Bodi did NOT eat this morning and did NOT eat this afternoon.  Sometimes he skips meals, but usually when his big brothers are home from college giving him extra treats.  So I wasn't too concerned.  Then I gave him a few pieces of spaghetti (plain) and he threw those up with some very YELLOW liquid.  Could he be sick from the gas??  Do I need to do anything?  Our emergency vet place doesn't have a good rep. . . . so I'm waiting to hear from the experts - you!!

BTW Bodi is acting perfectly normal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear Bodi is not feeling well, and glad you found the gas before it was very tragic! I don't know about gas sickness for dogs, but I'd think they would be pretty sensitive to it . Other than fresh air and airing out the house, I don't know what to do for him.

CALL THE EMERGENCY VET AND ASK!!!!!!

I'm afraid they will say to come in and I've not heard anything good about them.

Thanks, Sue.  We have done that and hope that is all he will need.  I will be home tomorrow dealing with the repairmen, so I can keep a good eye on him!

Maybe just call the emergency vet and ask...if he is acting fine though, just air out the house and keep an eye on him! That is scary though!

The yellow liquid he threw up was bile, and it's very common for a dog to vomit when he's had an empty stomach for a while. But he may also be nauseated from the gas and that's why he didn't want to eat.

I do think you should call the emergency vet and ask about this. I doubt that anyone here is an expert on gas leaks and how they might affect a dog. I don't think you can know that Bodi is fine, especially since he's lost his appetite and is nauseated.

He just ate some cheese - knew he couldn't turn that down!  Just wish I could call my regular vet.

The thing is, though, it's not a good idea to entice a dog to eat when he's telling you that he doesn't have an appetite. If he eats because he just can't resist the cheese, even though he is feeling nauseated or ill, there's a good chance he will vomit and then you can end up with a dog who is dehydrated and needs to go to the emergency room for fluids. I would not offer him anything other than his normal food.

I understand that you wish you could call your regular vet, but since that isn't a possibility, I would call the emergency vet and at least ask what you should be looking for in terms of the gas having affected him.

I agree...Bodi will probably throw up again even though he ate the cheese.  I wonder if poison control would know anything about gas leaks and animals?  (Just a thought if you don't like the emergency vet).  In school last week an oven was left on overnight (nice right?!) and when we all got there in the morning the building was filled with gas...especially my room, which is right above the cooking room.  (We were lucky the school was still standing.)  Within 5 minutes of being in the building I was lightheaded, nauseous, and had a headache, so I can only imagine what a full day of exposure could do.  I would definitely make a call just for peace of mind.  Best wishes to Bodi!!

I just googled and there wasn't much other than other forums, but the article linked above (and a lot of the forums) do say gas can defintely impact animals. It seems that the worst effects happen when the leak isn't detected. I agree with Sue about airing out the house for all of you, but I'm sure a call to the vet can't hurt.

I agree....I would call the Emergency Vet.  I'm assuming he was home all day in the house with the gas leak....I would definitely not be comfortable until I knew from someone more knowledgeable what the implications of that could be.  Good luck and please keep us posted.

It wouldn't hurt to call and just ask what the effects can be and what to look for. You can always deny needing to come in and at least know then what to look for tonight. I don't know of anything there is to do even for humans with natural gas inhalation.
