Hattie Took 1ST Place in Obedience Class Test!

Hattie took first place tonight in her Obedience testing for the Concho Kennel Club even beating out the club president's dog! She scored 197.5 out of 200! My girl rocks! The top picture is Hattie waiting for a command and the bottom picture is Hattie and I with her trainer Mondee. Saturday morning is the CGC test.

Good for you.  Tell us what you had to do.  Have you thought about continuing on in Competitive Obedience?

Since you have such a solid foundation, you don't necessarily need to work with a trainer.  You can train by yourself and there are a gazillion AKC shows in Texas.  It is nice to have other dogs to train with for distraction, but it is not necessary.  Check http://www.onofrio.com/execpgm/index?index=PL  for upcoming shows.

For help with training, I recommend the book Competition Obedience: A Balancing Act.  It is written in a clear and easy to follow way.  Once a dog has the basic skills, prepping for competition is really about polishing your performance. i.e are your fronts and finishes straight.... will your dog hold its sits and downs.  Have you done any off leash heeling?

Scot -- I would definitely recommend you all get Schultz into a class.  The more the merrier!  Particularly because your wife was a little reluctant or worries he will be too big.  You will both learn so much and your Doodle experience will be so much better.  I had no idea how "dog stupid" I was until I started training with the girls!  We would not have survived if we had not gone to training.
