I have heard so many scary stories regarding the poor health of Doodles.  My 2 are almost 4 and we have been lucky.  Some digestive issues but nothing serious this far and Max tested positive for Lyme's.  We are trying to get the medicine in him but he keeps vomiting from it.  Any suggestions?

put a little chicken broth in a bowl and put medicine in it.  This is how I given Harley is monthly heart worm medicine.
I assume the medication is an antibiotic.  Are you always giving it with food?  Murph is on antibiotics three times a day, so I'm actually giving him three smaller meals a day with his pill about 15 minutes after he finishes eating.
louie had lymes too...always gave him his pill in crunchy peanut butter

I found the BEST way to give pills is peanut butter on the bottom of a spoon.

  • Peanut butter on the Bottom side of the spoon
  • Put the pill into the peanut butter
  • Offer it to the dog spoon upside down
  • Gentle swift sweeping motion towards  the roof of the mouth

Dogs have to get the hang of taking the pills too.  It is like us trying to get used to eating with chop stix.  Just takes some time.

Really sorry to hear about your dog.   Hope it is better VERY SOON.

Many thanks for the tips about using peanut butter to disguise pills!  I have trouble getting Trav to eat the Comfortis, flea stuff.  He really hates it, and it's a big tablet.  Last time I cut it into four pieces and squished each piece into a little bite of mac and cheese.  That worked, but I'm sure peanut butter would work better!

As for vomiting, the Comfortis instructions say to give after a full meal to help prevent vomiting.  That might be worth a try.  So sorry to hear about the Lyme's.

We use peanut butter as well.   I just use my finger though.  Lucy will just lick it off my finger.  Sophie opens her mouth and I just scrape it off using her bottom teeth.  Both very easy.  Has to be Smart Ones Peanut butter though.  If I try to put the cheap stuff in there they won't take it.  They just turn up their nose.
too funny!  Smart Ones only?....yes they are
Mine are happy with any peanut butter but that's how I have given all dog pills. They just don't notice it in the yummy stuff.
Peanut butter is a good way ours our 3 & 4 and nothing too serious either.
Farmer John's liverwurst or bratwurst paste. I've used it for years. My dogs actually enjoy taking their medicine:)

Cooper is 2 and so far no problems apart from the usual worms and fleas once

I think that health can be a dice roll sometimes.... some dogs are from health tested parents and develop issues, others are from puppy mills or backyard breeders and are fine. Well bred dogs from health tested parents are more likely to be ok though

I get Cooper to do a trick then give her a pill - she thinks its a treat!

I just pop the pill in the back of the mouth and then hold the head up and blow into the nose.  This makes them swallow. works every time for me with all animals.
