Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hey Doodle experts :)
Happy Holidays!
So I'm surprising my new wife and bringing home our doodle in the beginning of February for her bday.
Couldn't be more excited :)
I am however pretty picky in the looks department, and want the best chances of having my doodle preference answered as he goes from puppy to adult.
I did a quick search and couldn't find the exact answers I wanted, so I was hoping some of you guys can help me decide which in the litter would more closely resemble what I'm after...
My personal preferences are:
-Don't like super curly poodle hair, or very shaggy sheep dog type hair. I want something very fleecy, wavy...not too curly...but definitely not straight.
-Would rather not have a white dog either. Apricot or brown is fine, but my wife just has a thing for not wanting a white dog......one of the pups is lighter than the other 2 so what are the odds of him turning white?
-Definitely don't like the big doodle mustache!!
lol, everyone has their own preference I know - but how can you tell from looking at little pups who has the least chance of growing a big 'stache??
This is an example of EXACTLY what I would like.
I think shes GORGEOUS!!!!!
And I know it's hard to tell which of the 3 pups will most closely resemble her but -can't blame me for trying right??
MY PERFECT DOODLE :)

Scroll down to "TONKA" - for me, thats perfect!
Color, coat, shape, everything!
These are the 3 pups - one of them is coming home with me!
They were born on our wedding day this November!

I know all doodles are different, and this ones an English doodle and the litter will be smaller, but in your best guess - which of the pups do you think will grow to most closely resemble Tonka and have the features we want?
And how can you tell who will have a mustache or not lol

Hi Larry,
I'm new to Doodle Kisses today actually as I was trying to figure out how this all works I came across your question. My family and I also will be getting an English Goldendoodle in Feb, so I feel your excitement! Ours will be white though ;) Although I have never had a doodle I have done extensive research on them for 7yrs, yes... wanting and waiting for my doodle that long! As you know there is no way to ever truly know what the adult puppy will look like but from all I have gathered... #1 would be the one you want for the looks your hoping for. #2 second but may end up lighter than you all want and pretty curly already (they get curlier as they get older). #3 already really curly. That's just my opinion :) Good luck and Happy Birthday to your wife, I turn 40 Feb. 17th... Shhhh ;)
Larry, All three are cute to me, but if your preference is for a wavy coat, #1 appears to be what you're after. The other two look, to me, like their coats will be much curlier. I agree with the others, though, that personality is key.
#1 seems most your style, the other two look like they have potential to be curlier than you prefer. They will probably all lighten up, but the darker two won't turn white. Maybe a dark cream, or a really light apricot but not white.
I'm not clear on the whole 'moustache' thing -- the only doodles who don't have a stache are the ones that have smooth retriever faces. That's part of the doodle look. But you can also keep the stache trimmed to your desired length. Just like some people keep the beard very short for cleanliness.
I think most of us who started out looking for a doodle had a list of appearance things we wanted. I did--I wanted a brown, smallish labradoodle. I got Trav, who did indeed start out as a brown, smallish labradoodle. Now he's sort of brownish-gray, maybe what's called lavender, and he's bigger than what I wanted originally. Naturally, I think he's absolutely perfect, but the point is--I did start out with preferences. Nothing wrong with that! It was just luck and a good breeder that helped me find a dog that was also healthy, well-socialized, smart, etc., etc. Part of the appeal of the labradoodles and goldendoodles is their appearance, which I still love!
This post was funny to me. I was a lot like you starting out. I had the ideal dog in my mind based on looks AND temperament. Guess what? I got BOTH in Bexter. I looked at your Tonka dog. You should go to my page and look at Bexter. I think they are very similar. Based on looks, you'd want #1. However, you don't want #1 if the temperament doesn't match. Like everyone is saying, obviously that is more important. Kind of like what we say about people, too! I believe that no matter what, you will think the dog is adorable if the temperament is right for you. And remember, grooming plays a VERY important part in the look of your doodle. Don't worry about the mustache, beard, etc. because you can always groom the doodle how you want it to look. Have a fun ride picking out your doodle. You will love the one you are meant to have!
I love that middle one but I would definitely go on temperament and personality first and colour and coat after that There are lots of gorgeous looking very challenging dogs LOL A member of my family (for hopefully many years) needs to fit in with us ...thankfully both my boys fit just right in.
Yep, Tonka is pretty much the perfect doodle. However, the coat as a puppy is not necessarily the one they will have as an adult. Tonka is a pretty young dog also. Doesn't really matter though, because once you have fallen in love with your new doodle, they can look anyway nature dictates and you will still be hopelessly in love. About the mustache - that is pretty much your own doing. If you don't like a mustache, cut it. My husband doesn't like long mustaches either because they are always wet, so he cuts the hair off beneath their chins but leave a little on the sides (to make them look like boys). He also leaves a little hair between the back legs (to make them look like boys). Take a look at our photos. We have always groomed all of our dogs, and you can make them look the way you want them to look. So....get your clippers and scissors and have some fun with your new dog. You WILL have the perfect doodle.
