Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Jackdoodle had his annual exam today. The total bill was $371. You'd think I would no longer be shocked by that, but I always am, lol.
I thought it would be interesting to hear how these prices compare to other vets around the country. (I'm in the Northern suburbs of Chicago).
Here's the breakdown:
Annual exam- 38.00
Fecal parasite screening- 28.00
Bordatella vaccine (intranasal)- 37.00
3-Year Rabies shot- 65.00
County Rabies tag fee- 18.00
Heartworm test- 45.00
Titer for Distemper/Parvo- 86.00
Hazardous waste disposal- 3.00
(The additional 51.00 was for a B12 injection and Tramadol, which would of course not apply to most dogs.)
Hopefully this made some of you feel better, either because your vets charge less or because you were smart enough to get pet insurance. :)

Your prices are comparable to mine here in Az. The last visit was $49.50 for exam, $25.50 for 3 year rabies, $42.00 for fecal, $25.50 for 3 year DAPP, but that is during a month they do a special, otherwise its $38.00. I decline HW tests and they dont like it but oblige me. I am religious about giving heartguard year round, and their excuse of it possibly not being totally eaten would never happen with my two pigs! They love it. I too will be stopping during the winter tho, for costs sake, and that will more than pay for the titers once a year.
We file for our own county tags and they are $17.00.
So prices are about the same. But this might make you feel better.....my costs are X2!!!!
It looks like my vet is very high on the three year rabies, though. 65.00 compared to 25.50 at your vet, 35.00 at Jessica's, and 11.00 (!!!) at Sheri's.
JD's vet bills are the main reason I don't have two, lol. This was just the annual visit. He is at the specialty vet center at least every other week for something or other. Laser, acupuncture, bloodwork, etc. We were there yesterday and will be there again next week.
Oh Karen, I hope you have insurance that kicks in for some of the extras!
No insurance. :(
But he's worth it. :)
Our Annual Exam is $48, Fecal including Giardia is $47.75, 3 yr rabies $32, Distemper/Parvo titer $68.50, Accuplex Test $59 and our town's tags are $11. Times two : ) Your rabies does seem high. Our town offers free rabies vaccinations twice a year and it's run by the local vet, so that's an option too. I should mention I'm in NJ.
Those prices look about the same as Darwin's vet. They have a $40 dollar flat office visit fee though, plus all of the other services atop it. :-(
The rabies shot once every 3 years really has no adverse affect on his health, and we do have wild animals in the yard and the neighborhood, including coyotes. The bordatella vaccine has also never had an adverse affect on him, and I feel he needs the protection. He does go to the groomers and spends a fair amount of time around other dogs in vets' offices and in the neighborhood, and bordatella is very contagious.
I am definitely paying too much for the rabies shot, though.
Are you in Lake County? I'm in Cook, which probably explains the difference in the county fee.
I am in Franklin, TN (a little south of Nashville) and this was our breakdown of Ragley's first annual exam:
Annual preventive care exam: $40
HW/Tick SNAP test: $43.50
Fecal examination: $21
Distemper/parvo, 3 yr: $45.50
Rabies booster, 3 yr: $22.50
Yep, I'm paying waaay too much for that 3 yr rabies, lol.
Our breakdown a few weeks ago:
Wellness Visit: 52.00
Fecal Flotation Test 28.00
Bordatella vaccine (injectable) 27.50
3 year Rabies vaccine 24.50
Heartworm and Lyme Combo Test 52.50
Distemper 1 year 20.00
From what I've been reading, it looks like next year I might want to ask about doing Distemper/Parvo titers, yes? I'm willing to pay more for a titer if it might be healthier for her to not receive a vaccine every year that she may not need. And, yes, your rabies looks high! :-) My Wellness Visit fee looks to be on the high side....
