I'm Heading Back To The Vet With Murph

Well Murphy's diarrhea is under control, and now there's a new crisis.  About a week ago I noticed that Murph was occasionally licking at his "anal area".  I noticed it a few times and thought he might be sore from all the diarrhea.  Then a couple days ago, he started doing it often, and it was getting inflamed.  So yesterday I took him in for a bath thinking that would soothe it.  Well last night and all morning he's constantly at it, and now it looks very sore and raw.  I have no idea what this is all about, but I called the Vet and she wants to see him this afternoon.  It really seems to be driving him crazy....poor guy.  Has anybody experienced this?  Guinness is also having an IBS episode (probably stress from his bath yesterday)...woke up to diarrhea all over the foyer and kitchen and vomit under our bed.  Looks like time for a new foyer rug and time to get the "green machine" cranking in the bedroom.  This has not been a good week for Doodles in our house.

Oh Jane, I'm so sorry to hear Murphy's having problems.  I hope it's easily and quickly resolved and you get some well deserved fun time.

oh boy! You've got your hands full of "doo" dle issues. Duncan seems to chew by his butt in the mornings but that's all. I have always assumed it was that he had an "expression" ready to happen along with his morning dump. But it's not red or raw at all. It's usually the licking sound that wakes me up. I HATE that sound. I hope he's feeling better soon. And guinness too...hope he feels better too...

We're back from the Vet with "butt spray".  Here's the story.  Apparently he was not naturally expressing his anal glands through the diarrhea episode.  So, they started to bother him which initiated the licking.  Then he kept at it until he got his butt totally irritated (like a hot spot).  The more he licked the more irritated it got, and the more he wanted to lick.  I have to clean him with Baby Wipes three to four times a day, then spray him, then put on a coating of Desitin (baby diaper rash cream).  They did express the anal glands and now with firmer stools that should correct the problem going forward.  I told the Vet I felt like a "doggie hypochondriac" because I'm there so much.  She assured me that all my visits were "legitimate"....sure I'm probably paying for her new Lexus.  So, we're good for now.  Thanks for all your kind thoughts, DK friends.

Always better safe than sorry, Jane.  I have paid a few months on my vet's house note for sure.....everybody's got to pay the bills somehow :) and our dogs are absolutely worth it.

Aw, Jane ceratinly not what u needed today for sure, or any other day.  Hope the vet will just give you some meds for the anal problem for him, but not sure why he is vomitting or diarrhea,,Lets hope it is nothing and he will be back to being his old self real soon.  Please let us know what the vet says.  I don't know how you got a black eye???...I usually read all your postings, but maybe I missed that one..Hope that gets better real fast too...
