So today one of my neighbors came over and I was showing off the final backyard makeover. She asked where the dogs go to the potty because they do not on the synthetic lawn. I motioned to the side yard and she said "I don't see any poop there!" And I said that's because I pick up after each time they go. She looked at me like I had two heads. I said it wasn't that hard, they go poo 2x a day: mid morning and late at night. That make her look at me like I was even stranger than before.

Maybe I am weird but I always pick up poo mainly because I don't want it lying around and them stepping in it or flies but also because I know if the dogs are regulating ok and if there is a problem.

So am I a nut?

No she lives down the street. The neighbors on either side of me have kept their lots complete dirt, sand and weeds. I agree about smell though. Ugh, who wants to smell that.

No, you are not crazy :) Here's a follow up question- where does everyone put their collected poops? I'm considering getting a compost bin and starting to compost the poop along with other scraps. Does anyone do this?

We built a doggy waste bin into the ground in the corner of the potty part of the girls yard, large lidded trash can, we have a spring loaded poop scoop hanging there for convenience.  You can find tutorials on Youtube of how to do it.  It is working out very well for us.

We have a separate trash bin under a small shelter DH built, to keep out the elements, in the designated potty spot on one side of the house. It gets collected on trash day and put in the main garbage bin.
I have been composting for 30+ years and dog poop should not go in tbe compost bin. Here is a link to a chart that may be helpful to you if you do get a compst bin. http://compostguide.com/composting-chart/

I know if you compost for a food garden you can not put dog or cat waste in there, but I thought it was acceptable in a flower garden...not enough time to read the article you listed but will be reading more about it this afternoon.  When I was looking for tutorials on the doggy waste bin we built I saw them use compost made with that on flower beds.  We don't compost so it is not an issue for us.

That's what I thought too...ok for flowers, not ok for veggie garden or edibles...Is that incorrect?

I am not an expert on it but I am pretty sure that is right and when we were looking at the waste station for my girls pen we saw a few people using the doggie compost on flower beds.

Just found this note when I Googled, from an agriculture web page

Uses for Dog Waste Compost

Compost is an excellent source of organic matter to

add to your garden or potted plants. It helps improve

soil structure which contributes to good aeration and

moisture-holding capacity. Compost is also a source

of plant nutrients.

Compost can also be used as a mulch material.

Dog waste compost can be used as a soil additive

for revegetation, lawn establishment, and planting

beds. It should not be used on crops grown for

human consumption. When used in a potting mix or

flower beds, a 25 percent compost blend is

recommended. Compost has a relatively high salinity

and is not recommended for germinating seedlings

We spend a lot of time in our backyard. I don't want to smell I don't want to see, I don't want to step in, any poop. Enzo's poop is picked up 5 seconds after she goes, each and every time. I always have a bag or two stuck on my pockets of jeans, shorts or jacket. The bag is deposited into a separate garbage can in an out of the way place, where we can't get a whiff of it. It's dumped into the regular garbage on garbage day. Yeah...guess I'm nuts/ crazy too! ;)

I have a trash can with a locking lid in the run at the side of the garage and that's where I put the poop bags until trash day as well. And I pay for an extra trash pick-up each week, partly for that reason. :)

We must all be nuts then. Remember, we're all poop-ologists....lol!!!

If you are a nut, so am I.  I don't want it out there and really neither do the girls, they avoid it.  I can't stand flies and from what I read it attracts rats (and who knows what else), we are country people and I don't want to encourage raccoons or any thing else into my yard.  I look at people that don't pick up as if THEY have two heads.
