hey all sorry if this is a little gross...but... midas has been licking his butt a lot... and it seems a little red around the area... i took a wet wash cloth and wiped it and stuff... i kind of smell a metal ish kind of smell..like pennies... sorry anyone know what this could be?

Ugh--sorry to be so slow--but what is a coulie? If it is his anus, it could be his anal glands are bothering him--they do emit quite a strange odor--and he could need to have them expressed at the vet's--they empty the glands out.

Metal makes me think "iron" which makes me think blood.  But if it smells coppery like a penny...then I have no idea.

My ridgeback occasionally licks her butt and we found that typically it's because it' itchy. Now this is going to sound gross, but when she's having an itchy anus episode, I rub cortisone cream on the area and she stops licking.

Whenever that has happened with my guys it was because their anal glands needed to be expressed.  If it doesn't clear on its own in a couple of days I'd have it checked.

I would say that if it is in that area, you need to check out his anal glands.  One of my dogs always has fluids when we give him a bath.  The other does not and does not like his anal glands expressed.  Ask the vet to show you how to express their anal glands and it is a good thing to do whenever he has a bath.  Not a silly (or gross) question at all.

Yep, I agree probably Anal glands. My Shitzu/Bichon had ongoing problems with this. I had them drained every time he went to the groomers (they will do it), but eventually it was so problematic we ended up removing them through surgery. If there is any blood or sore spots definately have it checked.
